Róðrarfelagið Knørrur
Róðrarfelagið Knørrur is a Faroese rowing club in Tórshavn, which was founded on 28 February 1985. The club has its boat houses on Skálatrøð and Evensens pakkhús in Tórshavn. The boats compete in the rowing competitions which are held every summer around the islands. The row boats are blue with a white line around the top of the boat. All of the boats have names from the Faroese ballad ''Ormurin Langi''. The boats of the row club has won several Faroese Championships. One of the former rowers of the club is Olympic rower Katrin Olsen, who became Faroese Champion with Róðrarfelagið Knørrur in 1997 and 1999, before she moved to Denmark. Later she became Danish champion in a different kind of rowing; in Denmark she was rowing in a lightweight double sculler. In 2008 she participated in the 2008 Summer Olympics together with Juliane Rasmussen, they ended up as number seven in the Women's lightweight double sculls. Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands ( ), or simply the Faroes ( fo, Føroyar ; da, Færøerne ), are a North Atlantic island group and an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark. Tórshavn
Tórshavn (; lit. "Thor's harbour"), usually locally referred to as simply ''Havn'', is the capital and largest city of the Faroe Islands. It is located in the southern part on the east coast of Streymoy. To the northwest of the city lies the mountain Húsareyn, and to the southwest, the Kirkjubøreyn. They are separated by the Sandá River. The city itself has a population of 13,957 (2022), and the greater urban area has a population of 21,078, including the suburbs of Hoyvik and Argir. The Norse (Scandinavians) established their parliament on the Tinganes peninsula in AD 850. Tórshavn thus became the capital of the Faroe Islands and has remained so ever since. Ormurin Langi
Ormurin Langi ("The Long Serpent") is a Faroese folk ballad. It was written in ca. 1830 by Jens Christian Djurhuus. Written in 86 verses in Faroese, the song deals with the Norwegian king Olaf Tryggvason. The title ''Ormurin Langi'' refers to Olaf Tryggvason's ship with the same name (Ormrinn Langi in Old Norse). History Around 1800 there was an increasing amount of attention paid to the store of Faroese folk ballads (kvæði), which survived in the oral tradition and were sung as an accompaniment to Faroese dancing. Even before 1800 Jens Christian Svabo had recorded ballads, but collecting got under way seriously after 1800, and names like Johan Henrik Schrøter, Jóannes à Króki and later on, V. U. Hammershaimb can be mentioned in this regard. Katrin Olsen
Katrin Olsen (born 5 January 1978 in Tórshavn, Faroe Islands) is a Danish– Faroese rower, and represents Denmark. She weights , and is therefore in the lightweight class. The 2008 Summer Olympics (), officially the Games of the XXIX Olympiad () and also known as Beijing 2008 (), were an international multisport event held from 8 to 24 August 2008, in Beijing, China. Juliane Elander Rasmussen (born 17 February 1979, in Odder) is a Danish rower. She weighs 61 kilograms, and is therefore in the lightweight class. She lives in Copenhagen. 2008 Summer Olympics In the first race at the lightweight double sculls at Beijing, Rasmussen and team-mate Katrin Olsen were in third place behind Japan, but finished in second place, and qualified for the semi-final. Rowing At The 2008 Summer Olympics – Women's Lightweight Double Sculls
Women's lightweight double sculls competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing was held between August 10 and 17 at the Shunyi Olympic Rowing-Canoeing Park. This rowing (sport), rowing event is a double sculls event, meaning that each boat is propelled by a pair of rowers. The "scull" portion means that the rower uses two oars, one on each side of the boat; this contrasts with sweep rowing in which each rower has one oar and rows on only one side. As a lightweight rowing competition, the body mass of the rowers was limited to a maximum of 59 kilograms each and 57 kilograms on average. The competition consisted of multiple rounds. Ólavsøka
Ólavsøka is the biggest summer festival in the Faroe Islands, and by most Faroese considered as the national holiday of the Faroes along with Flag Day on 25 April. Ólavsøka is celebrated over two days, from the 28th to the 29th of July, the second of which is the day when the Faroese Parliament (''Løgting'') opens its session. Ólavsøka is a cultural and sports festival with boat races, football matches and other events. The 28 July, which is the day where the finals of the rowing competitions take place, is half working day for the members of some of the labour unions while Saint Olaf's Day (''Ólavsøkudagur'') on 29 July is full holiday for members of most of the unions.
