Réseau Express De L'Aire Urbaine Lyonnaise
Réseau Express de l'Aire métropolitaine Lyonnaise (or Real) is a project that consists in improving and unifying some railways lines in the Lyon metropolitan area. It is said to be a "RER à la lyonnaise" (a sort of RER in Lyon). The most significative project is the "tram-train" in west area of Lyon urban area in 2011 and better frequencies of the trains. This project comes from the "Schéma régional des transports" of 1997 and has been initiated by many entities : région Rhône-Alpes, Communauté urbaine de Lyon, Sytral and SNCF, and several departements (Rhône, Loire, Isère, Ain). Rhône-Alpes () was an administrative region of France. Since 1 January 2016, it is part of the new region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It is located on the eastern border of the country, towards the south. The region was named after the river Rhône and the Alps mountain range. Its capital, Lyon, is the second-largest metropolitan area in France after Paris. Rhône-Alpes has the sixth-largest economy of any European region. Geography Rhône-Alpes is located in the southeast of France. The neighboring (pre-2016) regions are Bourgogne (Burgundy) and Franche-Comté to the north, Auvergne to the west, Languedoc-Roussillon to the southwest, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur to the south. The Urban Community of Lyon (french: Communauté urbaine de Lyon), also known as Grand Lyon (i.e. "Greater Lyon") or by its former acronym COURLY, is the former intercommunal structure gathering the city of Lyon (France) and some of its suburbs. There are several rapid transit systems in France. Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Paris, Rennes and Toulouse all have metro systems. Twenty-seven French cities have light rail and tram systems. Metros Trams and light rail Trams in France go back to 1837 when a 15 km (9.32 mi) steamtram line connected Montrond-les-Bains and Montbrison in the Loire. With the development of electric trams at the end of the 19th century, networks proliferated in French cities over a period of 15 years. Although nearly all of the country's tram systems were replaced by bus services in the 1930s or shortly after World War II, France is now in the forefront of the revival of tramways and light rail systems around the globe.
