Reel Big Fish is an American ska punk band from Orange County, California. The band gained mainstream recognition in the mid-to-late 1990s during the third wave of ska with the release of the gold-certified album ''Turn the Radio Off''. Soon after, the band lost mainstream recognition but gained an underground cult following. As of 2006, the band was no longer signed to a major record label and has since been independent. After numerous line-up changes, frontman Aaron Barrett is the last remaining founding member still performing in the band. History 1991–2001: Early success The band formed in 1991 while the members were in high school. The group started as a cover band until they released a demo in 1992, titled ''In The Good Old Days''. Goldfinger is an American punk rock and ska punk band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1994. In their early years the band was considered a contributor to the movement of third-wave ska, a mid-1990s revitalization in the popularity of ska. ''BASEketball'' is a 1998 American sports comedy film co-written and directed by David Zucker and starring ''South Park'' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, along with Yasmine Bleeth, Jenny McCarthy, Robert Vaughn, Ernest Borgnine, and Dian Bachar. "Sell Out" is the debut single by American ska punk band Reel Big Fish. Released as the first track on the group's second album ''Turn the Radio Off'' on August 13, 1996, the song has proven to be one of Reel Big Fish's more popular releases. Reception "Sell Out" was released in 1996 and gained the band a distinct amount of attention, becoming a hit in that year. ''Everything Sucks'' is Reel Big Fish's first full-length studio album. It was recorded at Sound Art Studios in 1994 and 1995, and released in 1995 on Reel Big Fish's independent label Piss Off Records. The album was engineered by John Gregorius. An EP version of the album was released by Mojo Records after Reel Big Fish released ''Turn the Radio Off'' in 1996. The full album was re-released by Mojo in January 2000, with a slightly altered track list, and the music video for the song "Everything Sucks", able to be viewed through a computer's CD-ROM drive. The original album is long out of print, and highly sought after by Reel Big Fish fans. The original release features an alternate version of "S.R." and refers to bands such as The Nuckle Brothers, No Doubt, and Sublime; it is not included on the Mojo release. ''Turn the Radio Off'' is the second full-length album by ska punk band Reel Big Fish. It was released in the U.S. in 1996 on Mojo Records. The single "Sell Out" both received extensive radio airplay and had mainstream success during 1997. "Sell Out" also appeared on the soundtrack to the video games ''FIFA 2000'', '' Aggressive Inline'', and ''Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure''. KROQ air personality Jed the Fish appears on the album cover held at gunpoint by frontman Aaron Barrett's then-girlfriend. The album has been certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Reel Big Fish later released a song titled "Turn the Radio Off" on their album ''We're Not Happy 'Til You're Not Happy'', named after this album. Third Wave Ska
Ska (; ) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae. It combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. Ska is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the off beat. It was developed in Jamaica in the 1960s when Stranger Cole, Prince Buster, Clement "Coxsone" Dodd, and Duke Reid formed sound systems to play American rhythm and blues and then began recording their own songs. Ska punk (also spelled ska-punk) is a fusion genre that mixes ska music and punk rock music together. (sometimes spelled skacore) is a subgenre of ska punk that mixes ska with hardcore punk. Early ska punk mixed both 2 tone and ska with hardcore punk. Ska punk tends to feature brass instruments, especially horns such as trumpets, trombones and woodwind instruments like saxophones, making the genre distinct from other forms of punk rock. It is closely tied to third wave ska which reached its zenith in the mid-1990s. Before ska punk began, many ska bands and punk rock bands performed on the same bills together and performed to the same audiences.
