Ryan Brenan
(John) Ryan Brenan (1 January 1798 – 5 June 1868) was an Australian politician and an elected member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly for 68 days in 1856. He founded, and outlined, the suburb of Smithfield in Sydney. Furthermore, Brenan Park, which is in that suburb, was named after him. Early life Brenan was born into a Protestant Anglo-Irish family and trained as a solicitor. He emigrated to Sydney in 1834 and held numerous judicial appointments including Superintendent of Convicts, Coroner, and Police Magistrate. At the same time he established a private legal practice and was the solicitor for the Bank of Australasia. He owned extensive property in Camden and Maitland. Results Of The 1859 New South Wales Colonial Election
The 1859 New South Wales colonial election was for 80 members representing 67 electoral districts. The election was conducted on the basis of a simple majority or first-past-the-post voting system. In this election there were 9 multi-member districts returning 22 members and 58 single member districts. In the multi-member districts each elector could vote for as many candidates as there were vacancies. 15 districts were uncontested. The electoral districts and boundaries were established under the ''Electoral Act'' 1858 (NSW), The changes included an increase in the number of members from 54 to 80 and an increase in the number of districts from 54 to 67, with 62 new districts and only five of the former districts remained. Sir Stuart Alexander Donaldson (16 December 1812 – 11 January 1867) was the first Premier of the Colony of New South Wales. Early life Donaldson was born in London, England. He entered his father's firm at the age of 15 and was sent first to Mexico (1831-1834), for business training. After returning to England in May 1834, Donaldson travelled to Sydney, New South Wales, aboard the ''Emma Eugenia'' where he arrived on 5 May 1835. He returned to London between 1841 and 1844. Career In 1848, Donaldson was elected a member of the original unicameral Legislative Council of New South Wales, representing the County of Durham from February 1848 to January 1853. Comments made while running for re-election in 1851, led Sir Thomas Mitchell to demand a public apology. Canterbury is a suburb extending across south-western Sydney and the Inner West, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
