Ruth Alsop
Ruth Alsop (1879 – 1976) was the first woman qualified as an architect in the Australian state of Victoria. The second youngest of the eight children of John and Anne Alsop, she was born in Kew, a suburb of Melbourne. She began work at her younger brother Rodney's firm Klingender & Alsop in 1907; she completed her articles in 1912. She continued to work with the firm until 1916, when she was forced to resign to take care of her parents, who were both ill. Alsop remained registered as an architect until 1927. She designed a house in Croydon where she lived with her sisters Edith, an artist, and Florence, a journalist, until the 1950s. Melbourne ( ; Boonwurrung/Woiwurrung: ''Narrm'' or ''Naarm'') is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second-most populous city in both Australia and Oceania. Croydon, Victoria
Croydon is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 28 km east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Maroondah local government area. Croydon recorded a population of 28,608 at the 2021 census. History Dating back to 1840 the land was first utilised by settlers for grazing and the first road cut through the area now known as Croydon, was initially known as Sawmill Road, as a sawmill was nearby. Later it became known as Oxford Road and later Mt Dandenong Road, some time in the early 1900s. Owing to the coarse silvery-white grass, the area now known as Croydon was first called "White Flats". The Lacey family from Essex, England named the area Croydon after Mrs Lacey's home town. They preferred this to Mr Lacey's home town, Steeple Bumpstead.
