Russia–Somalia relations (russian: Российско-сомалийские отношения) is the bilateral relationship between Russia and Somalia. A Somali Embassy currently operates in Moscow. Russia's embassy in Djibouti represents Russia in Somalia. History Early relations Diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and Somalia were established on September 11, 1960.. In June 1961, an agreement was signed on cultural cooperation between the countries. In 1962, the first military contacts took place, with 50 military personnel from Somalia being sent to get military education in the Soviet Union. The Organisation of African Unity (OAU; french: Organisation de l'unité africaine, OUA) was an intergovernmental organization established on 25 May 1963 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, with 32 signatory governments. One of the main heads for OAU's establishment was Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana. It was disbanded on 9 July 2002 by its last chairman, South African President Thabo Mbeki, and replaced by the African Union (AU). Some of the key aims of the OAU were to encourage political and economic integration among member states, and to eradicate colonialism and neo-colonialism from the African continent. The Somali Armed Forces are the military forces of the Federal Republic of Somalia.
