Russian Airships
This article outlines some of the non-rigid and semi-rigid airships used in or built in Russia and the Soviet Union. Origins of the Soviet Airship Program Like other nations in the early 20th century, Russia began researching and developing its own airships. Despite heavy investment in industry by the Russians in late 19th and early 20th century, aviation received little in subsidies and relied heavily on foreign technologies. The Imperial Russian Air Service did not come into being until 1912, and though small fixed-wings airplanes were used in World War I, they were limited in their capabilities. Only after the October Revolution in the 1920s did airship enthusiasts begin constructing small non-rigid ships. The first Soviet airship to ever take flight was the Krasnaia Zvezda ('Red Star') which saw its brief maiden voyage on January 3, 1921. Soviet Airships Under Stalin Airships saw further development under Joseph Stalin during the First Five Year Plan. Impressed by ...

1910s Russian Aircraft
Year 191 ( CXCI) was a common year starting on Friday (link will display the full calendar) of the Julian calendar. At the time, it was known as the Year of the Consulship of Apronianus and Bradua (or, less frequently, year 944 ''Ab urbe condita''). The denomination 191 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the Anno Domini calendar era became the prevalent method in Europe for naming years. Airships Of Russia
An airship or dirigible balloon is a type of aerostat or lighter-than-air aircraft that can navigate through the air under its own power. Aerostats gain their lift from a lifting gas that is less dense than the surrounding air. In early dirigibles, the lifting gas used was hydrogen, due to its high lifting capacity and ready availability. Helium gas has almost the same lifting capacity and is not flammable, unlike hydrogen, but is rare and relatively expensive. Significant amounts were first discovered in the United States and for a while helium was only available for airships in that country. Most airships built since the 1960s have used helium, though some have used hot air.A few airships after World War II used hydrogen. The first British airship to use helium was the ''Chitty Bang Bang'' of 1967. The envelope of an airship may form the gasbag, or it may contain a number of gas-filled cells. An airship also has engines, crew, and optionally also payload accommodation, ...

First Five-year Plan
The first five-year plan (russian: I пятилетний план, ) of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was a list of economic goals, created by Communist Party General Secretary Joseph Stalin, based on his policy of socialism in one country. The plan was implemented in 1928 and took effect until 1932. The Soviet Union entered a series of five-year plans which began in 1928 under the rule of Joseph Stalin. Stalin launched what would later be referred to as a "revolution from above" to improve the Soviet Union's domestic policy. The policies were centered around rapid industrialization and the collectivization of agriculture. Stalin desired to remove and replace any policies created under the New Economic Policy. The plan, overall, was to transition the Soviet Union from a weak, poorly controlled, agriculture state, into an industrial powerhouse. While the vision was grand, its planning was ineffective and unrealistic given the short amount of time given to meet ...

History Of Aviation
The history of aviation extends for more than two thousand years, from the earliest forms of aviation such as kites and attempts at tower jumping to supersonic and hypersonic flight by powered, heavier-than-air jets. Kite flying in China dates back to several hundred years BC and slowly spread around the world. It is thought to be the earliest example of man-made flight. Leonardo da Vinci's 15th-century dream of flight found expression in several rational designs, but which relied on poor science. The discovery of hydrogen gas in the 18th century led to the invention of the hydrogen balloon, at almost exactly the same time that the Montgolfier brothers rediscovered the hot-air balloon and began manned flights. Various theories in mechanics by physicists during the same period of time, notably fluid dynamics and Newton's laws of motion, led to the foundation of modern aerodynamics, most notably by Sir George Cayley. Balloons, both free-flying and tethered, began to be use ...

USSR 1931 Mi
The Soviet Union,. officially the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. (USSR),. was a transcontinental country that spanned much of Eurasia from 1922 to 1991. A flagship communist state, it was nominally a federal union of fifteen national republics; in practice, both its government and its economy were highly centralized until its final years. Other major cities included Leningrad (Russian SFSR), Kiev (Ukrainian SSR), Minsk (Byelorussian SSR), Tashkent (Uzbek SSR), Alma-Ata (Kazakh SSR), and Novosibirsk (Russian SFSR). Vera Mityagina
Vera Fedorovna Demina née Mityagina (russian: Вера Федоровна Демина (Митягина); 19111984) was a Soviet airship pilot. At the age of 28, Mityagina became the first woman to command an airship. In 1937, she commanded a female flight crew on the Soviet USSR-V1 airship. Early life Mityagina began as a telephone operator in Moscow. While working, she attended the flight school of Osoaviakhim (Society for the Promotion of Defense, Aviation and Chemical Construction), where she attended courses on airship control. After studying in the classroom, Mityagina first flew balloons then later was allowed to fly airships. In her first flight in a balloon, an accident occurred at 6,500 feet when the canvas of the balloon caught fire. Under the direction of her commander, Mityagina successfully cut free a portion of the canvas and was able to safely land on the ground with an improvised parachute. Mityagina graduated from flight school in 1932. Personal life Mi ...

Sergei Vladimirovich Demin
Sergius is a male given name of Ancient Roman origin after the name of the Latin ''gens'' Sergia or Sergii of regal and republican ages. It is a common Christian name, in honor of Saint Sergius, or in Russia, of Saint Sergius of Radonezh, and has been the name of four popes. It has given rise to numerous variants, present today mainly in the Romance (Serge, Sergio, Sergi) and Slavic languages (Serhii, Sergey, Serguei). It is not common in English, although the Anglo-French name Sergeant is possibly related to it. Etymology The name originates from the Roman ''nomen'' (patrician family name) ''Sergius'', after the name of the Roman ''gens'' of Latin origins Sergia or Sergii from Alba Longa, Old Latium, counted by Theodor Mommsen as one of the oldest Roman families, one of the original 100 ''gentes originarie''. It has been speculated to derive from a more ancient Etruscan name but the etymology of the nomen Sergius is problematic. Chase hesitantly suggests a connection with the ...

SSSR-V6 OSOAVIAKhIM
SSSR-V6 ''OSOAVIAKhIM'' (russian: СССР-В6 Осоавиахим) was a semi-rigid airship designed by Italian engineer and airship designer Umberto Nobile and constructed as a part of the Soviet airship program. The airship was named after the Soviet organisation OSOAVIAKhIM. V6 was the largest airship built in the Soviet Union and one of the most successful. In October 1937, it set a new world record for airship endurance of 130 hours 27 minutes under command of Ivan Pankow, beating the previous record by the German airship ''Graf Zeppelin''. Crash In February 1938, a Soviet Arctic expedition led by Ivan Papanin became stranded on drifting ice pack. V6 was sent on a rescue mission from Moscow with a short intermediate landing in Murmansk. During the flight, at approximately 19:30 on 6 February 1938, the airship crashed into the hillside near Kandalaksha, 220 km south of Murmansk. She caught fire and was destroyed. Of the 19 people on board, 13 perished. Their rema ...
