Russia At The 2010 Winter Paralympics
Russia sent a delegation to compete at the 2010 Winter Paralympics in Vancouver, Canada. The country fielded thirty-two athletes in cross-country skiing, biathlon, and alpine skiing. Russia placed second in the final medal standings, though first in the total medal count, winning thirty-eight medals. The ''Moscow Times'' noted the irony in the fact that there had been high hope for Russia's Winter Olympians, while fairly little attention had been paid to its Paralympians, until their performance stood out with a crop of medals. While the ''Moscow Times'' focused on the difficulties faced by the country's Paralympians in their everyday life, however, the ''Vancouver Sun'' remarked: "Unlike Canada and other countries where almost all Paralympians must have jobs, Team Russia's competitors are akin to 'sports professionals'. The Russian Paralympic Committee (russian: Паралимпийский комитет России) is the National Paralympic Committee representing Russia. History The Russian Paralympic Committee was founded in 1996. On 7 August 2016, it was suspended by the International Paralympic Committee due to Doping in Russia, the state-sponsored doping scandal. 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games On 9 December 2019, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned Russia from all international sport for four years, after it was found that data provided by the Russian Anti-Doping Agency had been manipulated by Russian authorities with a goal of protecting athletes involved in its Doping in Russia, state-sponsored doping scheme. Moscow Times
''The Moscow Times'' is an independent English-language and Russian-language online newspaper. It was in print in Russia from 1992 until 2017 and was distributed free of charge at places frequented by English-speaking tourists and expatriates such as hotels, cafés, embassies, and airlines, and also by subscription. The newspaper was popular among foreign citizens residing in Moscow and English-speaking Russians. In November 2015 the newspaper changed its design and type from daily to weekly (released every Thursday) and increased the number of pages to 24. The newspaper became online-only in July 2017 and launched its Russian-language service in 2020. In 2022, its headquarters were relocated to Amsterdam in the Netherlands in response to restrictive media laws passed in Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. The website was later banned in Russia. Nikolay Polukhin
Nikolay Polukhin (born July 7, 1982) is a Russian cross-country skier, biathlete and Paralympic Champion. He is notable for winning the most medals at the Vancouver 2010 Winter Paralympics, with six medals, including one gold. Polukhin was blinded in 1993 in an electrical accident. Kirill Mikhaylov (born April 2, 1983) is a Russian cross-country skier, biathlete, and four-time Paralympic Champion. He competed in the classification category, standing events. Mikhaylov competed in cross-country skiing at the 2006 Winter Paralympics. He took the gold in the men's 20 km and the bronze in the men's 10 km, standing. He placed 5th in the men's relay with Alfis Makamedinov and Vladimir Kiselev and 4th in the men's 5 km, standing.
