Rural City Of Mildura
The Rural City of Mildura is a local government area in Victoria, Australia, located in the north-western part of the state. It covers an area of being the largest LGA in the state. In June 2016 the area had a population of 53,878. It includes the city of Mildura and the towns of Merbein, Red Cliffs, Irymple, Ouyen, Werrimull, Murrayville, Walpeup and Hattah. It was formed in 1995 from the amalgamation of the City of Mildura, Shire of Mildura and Shire of Walpeup. The Rural City is governed and administered by the Mildura Rural City Council; its seat of local government and administrative centre is located at the council headquarters in Mildura, it also has service centres located in Ouyen and a couple of other locations within Mildura. The Rural City is named after the main urban settlement lying in the north of the LGA, that is Mildura, which is also the LGA's most populous urban centre with a population of 30,647. Merbein, Victoria
Merbein is a town just north of Mildura, Victoria, in the Sunraysia region of Australia. It is on the Calder Highway between Mildura and the Murray River crossing at the Abbotsford Bridge to Curlwaa. At the , the town had a population of 1,981. Merbein is 12 kilometres from Mildura, 553 km from Melbourne and 389 km from Adelaide. The town is known for farming and is part what is informally called the "fruit bowl" or "food bowl", the growing region roughly made of the Coomealla and Sunraysia irrigation districts fed by the Darling and Murray rivers. Produce farmed in Merbein include grapes, citrus, mushrooms, green beans, asparagus and pistachios. The Mallee
The Mallee covers the most northwesterly part of Victoria, bounded by the South Australian and New South Wales borders. Definitions of the south-eastern boundary vary, however, all are based on the historic Victorian distribution of mallee eucalypts. These trees dominate the surviving vegetation through most of Mallee, (except for swamps and areas along waterways, and very rare stands of ''casuarina''). The Shire of Walpeup was a local government area in northwestern Victoria, Australia, along the South Australian border. The shire covered an area of , and existed from 1911 until 1995. History Walpeup was incorporated as a shire on 1 November 1911, created out of parts of the Shires of Mildura, Swan Hill, Lawloit, Lowan, Dimboola and Karkarooc. Walpeup is a town in the Mallee region of north west Victoria. The town is in the Rural City of Mildura local government area and on the Mallee Highway and Pinnaroo railway line between Ouyen and the South Australian border, north west of the state capital, Melbourne and south west of the regional centre of Mildura. At the , Walpeup had a population of 158. History The township was settled when the railway arrived, a full post office opening on 16 December 1912. The area of the locality contains the smaller area of Paigne which had a post office open from 1912 until 1916. Education The Mallee Research Station at Walpeup was established in 1922 to research dryland farming in the Mallee. It is a campus of the Sunraysia Institute of TAFE. Murrayville is a town on the section of the Mallee Highway and Pinnaroo railway line between Ouyen and the South Australian border. It is about east of the South Australian border and north west of the state capital Melbourne, but east of Adelaide. At the 2016 census, Murrayville had a population of 280, down from 444 ten years before. The local school, Murrayville Community College is a P-12 school. History The Post Office opened on 1 November 1910. The Murrayville railway station opened in 1912 but is no longer used for passengers. Werrimull is a small town and locality in the Rural City of Mildura, part of the Sunraysia region of Victoria. The place by road, is situated about 10 kilometres west of Karawinna and 10 kilometres east of Bambill.
