Runavík Municipality ( fo, Runavíkar kommuna) is a municipality of the Faroe Islands. The town of Saltangará is the administrative centre. Its area comprises parts of the island of Eysturoy. Eysturoy
Eysturoy (pronounced estroimeaning 'East Island') is a region and the second-largest of the Faroe Islands, both in size and population. Description Eysturoy is separated by a narrow sound from the main island of Streymoy. Eysturoy is extremely rugged, with some 66 separate mountain peaks, including Slættaratindur, the highest peak in the archipelago at . The country's two longest fjords, Skálafjørður in the south and Funningsfjørður in the north, almost split the island in two halves. The isthmus in between, Millum Fjarða, is one of the flattest areas in the country. Important settlements on Eysturoy are Fuglafjørður in the north and the densely populated area of the municipalities of Runavík and Nes in the south. Lamba (Faroe Islands)
Lamba (, da, Lamhauge), is a small village in the bottom of the inlet of Lambavík on the east coast of Eysturoy, Faroe Islands. There are similarly named places, Lamba in Shetland and Lambay in Ireland. Settlement The houses in Lamba are spread down through the valley following the road on its way from the bottom of the valley down to the small harbour. There is a huge rock in the harbour. Nobody wants to remove it because it is said to be inhabited by ‘huldufólk’, a race of elfs or faries that people used to believe in. They are said to be fierce if disturbed. Heri Joensen of Viking metal band Týr is from Lamba. Skipanes
Skipanes ( da, Skibenæs) is a village on the Faeroese island of Eysturoy in Runavík Municipality. Founded in 1841, the population as of August 2022 was 55 people. In amalgamation with undir Gøtueiði in Eysturkommuna, it forms a tiny conurbation; a small creek acts as a border between the two settlements. Notable residents of Skipanes include Terji Skibenæs, the guitarist of the Faeroese Viking Metal group Týr. Its postal code is FO-665. Oyndarfjørður
Oyndarfjørður ( da, Andefjord) is a village on the northeastern coast of the Faroese island of Eysturoy in the Runavíkar municipality. The 2020 population was 143. Its postal code is FO 690. The town's church dates from 1838. It is famous for two rinkusteinar, or rocking stones, located in the sea nearby. The name of the village is derived from the man's name Oyvindur (which is Eyvindur in Icelandic). The village was isolated until the road from the south reached the village in 1969. There is a hiking trail over old overland postal routes north from Fuglafjørður to Oyndarfjørður (with Youth Hostel), then west to Elduvík, then south to Funningsfjørður and back to Fuglafjørður. Glyvrar
Glyvrar ( da, Glibre) is a village located on Eysturoy, in the Faroe Islands. It is one of several villages on the east side of the Skálafjørður fjord that have grown into a 10-kilometre-long conurbation. In Glyvrar there is a museum called ’Bygdasavnid Forni’. The church in Glyvrar was originally built in 1927, but it was heavily restored in 1981. From 1903 to 1928 there was a school for navigators in Glyvrar. Graduates from here would become masters of fishing-ships. The Bible translator Victor Danielsen worked as a teacher in Glyvrar in 1914. The salmon-farming company Bakkafrost is based in Glyvrar. Bakkafrost is the largest fish farming company in the Faroe Islands and one of the biggest private employers in the islands, if not the biggest. Bakkafrost is the eighth largest fish-farming company in the world. Funningur
Funningur is a village on the Faroe Islands. It is located on the northwest coast of Eysturoy (). It was the only village in the municipality called ''Funnings kommuna'', which on 1 January 2009 became part of Runavíkar kommuna. To the west of the village rises the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur (880m), however, the summit itself is not visible from the village. History Tradition says that the first viking who settled on the Faroe Islands, Grímur Kamban, settled in Funningur. He was a Norwegian Viking escaping the tyranny of the Norse king Haraldur Hárfagri. However, this is an error in the saga, because Harald's reign was in the late 9th century, while the first Norse settlers reached the Faroes after 825.
