Rugby Union In Uganda
Rugby union in Uganda has been played since colonial times when it was introduced by the British. The governing body is the Uganda Rugby Football Union. History Rugby was originally introduced to Uganda by British colonists. Idi Amin and rugby A notable fan of all Ugandan sports, Former President Idi Amin was very athletic during his time in the army. At 193 cm (6 ft 4 in) tall, he was the Ugandan light heavyweight boxing champion from 1951 to 1960, and also a swimmer and rugby player. Uganda National Rugby Sevens Team
The Uganda national rugby sevens team team won the 2022 Africa Mens 7s, which were World Cup and Commonwealth Games qualifiers. Uganda won the Africa Mens 7s on 23rd April 2022 at Kyadondo Rugby Ground. British And Irish Lions
The British & Irish Lions is a rugby union team selected from players eligible for the national teams of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. The Lions are a test side and most often select players who have already played for their national team, although they can pick uncapped players who are eligible for any of the four unions. The team currently tours every four years, with these rotating between Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in order. Africa Cup
The Rugby Africa Cup is a two-year men's rugby union tournament involving the top 16 African nations based on their World Rugby rankings, it is organised by Rugby Africa. The tournament was first held in 2000. It was renamed the Rugby Africa Cup in November 2019, it was previously called the Africa Cup since 2006, the CAR Top 9 and CAR Top 10. Due to South Africa being far stronger than any other African nation, South African teams have only competed five times, and won the competition three times. The winning South African teams on these occasions were the under 23 or amateur players (in 2005, 2006 and 2007). The Uganda women's national rugby union team, known as the Lady Rugby Cranes, are a national sporting side of Uganda that represents them at rugby union. The side played their first test against Rwanda in 2005. History Uganda played their first international test on 26 February 2005 against Rwanda in Kigali. 1962 British Lions Tour To South Africa
In 1962 the British Lions rugby union team toured Southern and Eastern Africa. Overall the tourists played twenty-five matches, winning sixteen, losing five and drawing four. The Lions were unsuccessful in the test series against , losing by three matches to nil with one match drawn. The first three tests were close; the first match was drawn 3–3 and South Africa won the second 3–0 and the third 8–3. The fourth test resulted in a bigger win for South Africa, 34–14. The tour included games against Rhodesia (which would become Zimbabwe), South West Africa (future Namibia, then part of South Africa) and East Africa in Kenya; winning all three. Nairobi
Nairobi ( ) is the capital and largest city of Kenya. The Uganda national rugby union team are a national sporting side of Uganda, representing them at rugby union. Rugby union was introduced by the British during colonial rule and Uganda played their first international game against Kenya in 1958. They have not yet qualified for the Rugby World Cup. Uganda compete annually against Kenya in the Elgon Cup and the Africa Cup. The Rugby Cranes won the CAR in 2007. History Uganda has a long history of rugby participation dating back to even before the first official rugby match was ever played in 1958. Kyadondo Rugby Club
Kyadondo Rugby Club is a rugby union ground in Kampala, Uganda. It was built in 2000. Facilities include main ground, a training pitch and a club house. The ground is home to several club teams, among them Heathens RFC, a leading rugby club in Uganda. It has also hosted home games of the Uganda national rugby union team, but the Uganda Rugby Union is considering hosting games at the National Stadium or Nakivubo Stadium due to limited capacity of Kyadondo.
