Rugby Sevens At The 1998 Commonwealth Games
Rugby sevens at the 1998 Commonwealth Games was the first Commonwealth Games where rugby sevens was played. It was at the time one of the male-only sports at the Commonwealth Games. The gold medal was won by New Zealand who defeated Fiji 21–12 in the final on 14 September 1998. In the bronze medal playoff Australia defeated Samoa 33–12. Gambia and Zimbabwe withdrew before the tournament started, resulting in a re-draw of the first round matches and groups. Rico Gear
Rico Levi Gear (born 26 February 1978) is a former New Zealand rugby union player. He was a specialist right wing but also covered midfield positions. He is the older brother of New Zealand winger Hosea Gear Club career Gear was educated at Gisborne Boys' High. As a young man Gear also played for the Tolaga Bay rugby union club just outside Gisborne. In 1990 Gear played for the Gisborne East Coast under 13 rugby league team. He also studied anthropology at Massey University with an emphasis on Māoridom and Māori language for two years. Gear made his provincial debut in 1997, playing for Poverty Bay against King Country. He has since played for provincial sides; Auckland, Bay of Plenty, North Harbour and Nelson Bays. He made his Super 12 debut for the Auckland Blues in 1999 against the Queensland Reds. Brendan Williams (rugby Union)
Brendan Williams (born 21 May 1978 in Urbenville) is a retired Australian-born rugby union player. He played at Fullback. He first came to stardom as Australian Under 21s player in 1995. Signed to Randwick Rugby Club in 1998, a club he played for since 1995, he was awarded The Daily Telegraph Rookie of the Year award. He later moved to New South Wales Waratahs. He was included in the Australian Commonwealth Games Rugby Sevens twice in consecutive games, becoming a bronze medalist with his teammates. He has also played as an international rugby player, notably playing for Petrarca Rugby based in Padova, Italy and Benetton Treviso, Italy in the professional Italian rugby union as a wing (fullback). Australian National Rugby Union Team (sevens)
The Australia men's national rugby sevens team participates in international competitions such as the World Rugby Sevens Series and Rugby World Cup Sevens. The current captain of the team is Nick Malouf, and the head coach is John Manenti . Rugby sevens is now recognised as an Olympic sport and made its debut at the 2016 Summer Olympics. Australia qualified for the tournament after winning the 2015 Oceania Sevens Championship. Australia also competes at other international tournaments for rugby sevens, including at the Commonwealth Games. Team name The Australia men's national sevens side, as confirmed by head coach Andy Friend in an interview with Green and Gold Rugby website, does not have a nickname as of 2016. Waisale Serevi
Waisale Tikoisolomoni Serevi (born 20 May 1968) is a Fijian former rugby union football player and coach, and is a member of the World Rugby Hall of Fame. Serevi is renowned for his achievements in rugby sevens, while also enjoying a long career in fifteen-a-side rugby at both club and national team levels. Nicknamed "The Wizard" by commentators, he is widely considered to be the greatest rugby sevens player in the history of the game. A biography of Serevi titled ''Waisale Serevi: King of Sevens'' by Nick Darvenzi was published in 2018. In the 15-man game, he played for Fiji 39 times between 1989 and 2003, and scored 376 points. This included representing Fiji in the 1991, 1999, and 2003 Rugby World Cups. He also played professionally for the Mitsubishi, Leicester, Stade Montois, Stade Bordelais and Staines rugby teams. Marika Vunibaka
Marika "Dawainavesi" Vunibaka (born 3 November 1974) is a Fijian former rugby union player. He represented the Fiji national team on numerous occasions, including at the 1999 Rugby World Cup in Wales and the 2003 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Vunibaka represented Fiji at rugby sevens level from 1997 to 2008 and is one of the few sevens players to play in three Rugby World Cup Sevens, 1997, 2001 and 2005. Fiji won the World Cup in both 1997 and 2005, and he was the top try scorer in the 1997 World Cup. Rugby fifteens Vunibaka joined Leicester on trial in 1997, he scored a hat trick of three tries on his only first team appearance against Loughborough Students, he was the first Leicester player to score a hat trick on debut since 1935. Setareki Tawake
Setareki "Seta" Tawake Naivaluwaqa (born 1 March 1969 in Kavala, Kadavu) is a retired Fijian rugby union player, who was capped for Fiji on 31 occasions. He played as Openside flanker or Number 8. He played in two Rugby World Cups. He was also a soldier Tawake played both 7's and 15's. He studied at Nasinu Secondary School and he represented them in both 7's and 15's rugby. He made his international debut in 15's against Samoa on 20 June 1992 in Suva. He represented the Fiji sevens starting in 1996, until helping them to win the 1998 Hong Kong sevens. He was also part of the Fiji team to the 1998 Commonwealth Games where he was part of the silver winning team. Alifereti Doviverata
Ro Alifereti Raivalita Doviverata (born 14 June 1976 in Suva) is a Fijian rugby union footballer. He plays as a Flanker or a No. 8. His nickname is Dovi. He is from a chiefly background and his father is one of the chiefs of Rewa. He first played for Fiji in Sevens. A Fiji schoolboy rep in 1993 and 1995, he first played for the Fiji sevens team in 1996 before spending one season with Redruth in England. He played in the opening two IRB sevens tournaments of the 2000-01 season. He made his debut for Fiji against Spain in 1999. He missed out on the 2001 Rugby World Cup Sevens in Argentina but was picked by the former Italy and at that time coach of Fiji Brad Johnstone to be part of the 1999 Rugby World Cup Fiji team that year.
