Rufus Paine Spalding
Rufus Paine Spalding (May 3, 1798 – August 29, 1886) was a nineteenth-century politician, lawyer and judge from Ohio. From 1863 to 1869, he served three terms in the United States House of Representatives, U.S. House of Representatives. He also served as a justice of the Ohio Supreme Court from 1849 through 1852 and as a member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1839 through 1842. Early life Born in West Tisbury, Massachusetts, Spalding graduated from Yale College in 1817. After graduating, Spalding began his study of law as an apprentice under Zephaniah Swift, the father of his future wife Lucretia A. Swift. Swift was a prominent lawyer and judge from Connecticut, and the author of several legal "digests." During his apprenticeship, Swift was the sitting Chief Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court.
