Ruben A. Valdez (January 27, 1937 – October 1, 2019) was an American politician in the state of Colorado. During his term he served as Speaker of the House from 1975 to 1976, and as House Minority Leader from 1977 to 1978. He was the first Hispanic person to serve as Speaker of the Colorado House of Representatives. Born in Trinidad, Colorado, he was the youngest of nine children. He died at the age of 82 in 2019. Trinidad, Colorado
Trinidad is the home rule municipality that is the county seat and the most populous municipality of Las Animas County, Colorado, United States. The population was 8,329 as of the 2020 census. Trinidad lies north of Raton, New Mexico, and south of Denver. It is on the historic Santa Fe Trail. History Early Trinidad was first explored by Spanish and Mexican traders, who liked its proximity to the Santa Fe Trail. It was founded in 1862 soon after coal was discovered in the region. This led to an influx of immigrants eager to capitalize on this natural resource. By the late 1860s, the town had about 1,200 residents. Red Rocks Community College (RRCC) is a Public university, public community college in Lakewood, Colorado, Lakewood and Arvada, Colorado. It is part of the Colorado Community College System. Colorado Heights University was a private university in Denver, Colorado. It was part of the Teikyo University Group. In July, 2009 it changed its name from Teikyo Loretto Heights University to Colorado Heights University. It opened in 1989 on the campus of the former Loretto Heights College and closed in 2016 due to declining enrollment.
