Royal Navy Burying Ground (Halifax, Nova Scotia)
The Royal Navy Burying Ground is part of the Naval Museum of Halifax and was the Naval Hospital cemetery for the North America and West Indies Station at Halifax, Nova Scotia. It is the oldest military burial ground in Canada. The cemetery has grave markers to those who died while serving at Halifax and were treated at the Naval medical facility or died at sea. Often shipmates and officers had the grave markers erected to mark the deaths of the crew members who died while in the port of Halifax. The number of burials is estimated at over 400, however, there are only 89 stone markers remaining. There was a register of deaths established in 1860 for the burial ground. As well, surgeons of a ship registered the deaths of crew members, including how the person died and where they were buried. These reports were entered in the official register, with a detailed account sent quarterly to the Medical Director-General, Admiralty, England. There is no local record of who is buried. Admiral Sir William King-Hall, (11 March 1816 – 29 July 1886) was a Royal Navy officer who served as Commander-in-Chief, The Nore from 1877 to 1879. Admiral of the Fleet Sir Houston Stewart, (3 August 1791 – 10 December 1875) was a Royal Navy officer and briefly a Liberal Party Member of Parliament. George Seymour (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral of the Fleet Sir George Francis Seymour, (17 September 1787 – 20 January 1870) was a Royal Navy officer. After serving as a junior officer during the French Revolutionary Wars, Seymour commanded the third-rate under Admiral Sir John Duckworth at the Battle of San Domingo during the Napoleonic Wars. He also commanded the sloop at the blockade of Rochefort and the fifth-rate under Admiral Lord Gambier at the Battle of the Basque Roads. He then saw active service during the War of 1812. Henry Seymour (Royal Navy Officer)
Vice-Admiral George Henry Seymour, (20 March 1818 – 25 July 1869) was a Royal Navy officer who served as Third Naval Lord from 1866 to 1868. Career Seymour was the son of Admiral Sir George Seymour and grandson of Lord Hugh Seymour. His mother was Georgiana Mary, daughter of Admiral the Hon. Sir George Cranfield Berkeley. Francis Seymour, 5th Marquess of Hertford, was his elder brother. He joined the Royal Navy in 1831 and, having been promoted to captain in 1844, was given command of in 1845.
