The Royal Dutch Korfball Association (Dutch: ''Koninklijk Nederlands Korfbalverbond'', or KNKV) is the governing body of korfball in the Netherlands. It organises the main Dutch korfball leagues (Korfbal League and Hoofdklasse) and the more recreative leagues, and the Dutch national team. History The association was founded on 2 June 1903 as Dutch Korfball Association (Dutch: ''Nederlandse Korfbal Bond,'' or NKB). In 1973 it fused with the Christian Korfball Association (Dutch: ''Christelijke Korfbalbond'', or CKB). Part of the deal was that clubs that were part of the CKB did not have to play on sunday in the new constellation. Zeist
Zeist () is the capital and largest town of the municipality of Zeist. The town is located in the Utrecht province of the Netherlands, east of the city of Utrecht. History The town of "Seist" was first mentioned in a charter in the year 838. The original settlement was located at the present ''Dorpsstraat''. In the late 12th century, a church was built here. Its tower is now a part of the Reformed Church, the remainder of which was built in the 19th century. Until medieval times, a branch of the river Rhine flowed close to the centre of the town. Korfball ( nl, korfbal) is a ball sport, with similarities to netball and basketball. It is played by two teams of eight players with four female players and four male players in each team. The objective is to throw a ball into a netless basket that is mounted on a high pole. The sport was invented by Dutch school teacher Nico Broekhuysen in 1902. In the Netherlands there are approximately 500 clubs and more than 90,000 people playing korfball. The sport is also played in Belgium and Taiwan, and in nearly 70 other countries. History In 1902 Nico Broekhuysen, a Dutch school teacher from Amsterdam, was sent to Nääs, a town in Sweden, to follow an educational course about teaching gymnastics to children. This is where he was introduced to the Swedish game "ringboll". In ringboll one could score points by throwing the ball through a ring that was attached to a 3 m pole. Korfbal League
The Korfbal League is the highest echelon of korfball in the Netherlands. The league was founded in 2005 as the new highest level in Dutch korfball. Before that the top level was split in two divisions. Since the start of the competition the format has been the same. The winner of the Korfbal League qualifies for the IKF Europa Korfball Cup while the number 10 relegated to the Hoofdklasse (korfball). The number 9 will compete with the loser of the Hoofdklasse final in a play-off for a position in the Korfbal League. History The Royal Dutch Korfball Association started the Korfbal League in 2005 to make top level korfball more attractive for the public. This was done by fusing the former two divisions into one. The Netherlands national korfball team ( nl, Nederlands korfbalteam) represents the Netherlands in international korfball. It is controlled by the Royal Dutch Korfball Association (KNKV), the governing body of korfball in the Netherlands. They are the most successful national korfball team in the world; having won ten of the eleven World Championships (only non-win came in 1991 when they lost in the final against Belgium) and all eight editions of the European Championships and all nine editions of the World Games. The International Korfball Federation (IKF) is the governing body of korfball. IKF is responsible for the organisation of korfball's major international tournaments, notably the IKF World Korfball Championship. The IKF was founded on 11 June 1933 in Antwerp, Belgium as a continuation of the International Korfball Bureau established in 1924 by the Dutch and Belgian Associations. The headquarters is in Utrecht, Netherlands, since December 2020, moving from Zeist.
