Royal Derby Hospital
Royal Derby Hospital is one of two teaching hospitals in the city of Derby, the other being the London Road Community Hospital. It is managed by the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. History The original hospital on the site was the Derby City General Hospital, which was built in 1927 and latterly focused on maternity and children's care. The hospital, which had become quite dilapidated, was demolished in September 2006. A new hospital was procured under a Private Finance Initiative contract to replace both the Derby City General Hospital and the Derbyshire Royal Infirmary in 2003. The new hospital was built by Skanska at a cost of £333 million. It was opened by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh in April 2010. Facilities The new hospital has 1,159 acute beds and 35 operating theatres. It provides 200 single en-suite rooms and 4-bed bays for patients on its wards. University Of Nottingham Medical School At Derby
The University of Nottingham Medical School at Derby was opened in September 2003 by Dr John Reid, then Secretary of State for Health. It is part of the University of Nottingham and is located in the nearby city of Derby in the East Midlands of England. It offers a four-year Graduate Entry Medical (GEM) course (initially for 90 students) as well as a 3-year Undergraduate Medical Physiology and Therapeutics degree (available as a 4-year foundation degree) as well. It is currently led (2015- ) by Professor John Alcolado. The medical school is attached to the Royal Derby Hospital and houses a lecture theatre, anatomy suite and clinical skills teaching facility. Derbyshire Children's Hospital is a children's hospital in Derby, Derbyshire in the United Kingdom. It is managed by the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust. It was the only entirely new children's hospital built in the UK in the twentieth century. History The hospital was established as the Derbyshire Hospital for Sick Children in a Victorian Era, Victorian building on North Street in 1877. It joined the National Health Service in 1948 and moved to a modern building on the Royal Derby Hospital site in 1996. The Derbyshire Royal Infirmary was a hospital in Derby that was managed by the Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Following the transfer of community services to the London Road Community Hospital located further south-east along London Road, the infirmary closed in 2009 and most of the buildings were demolished in spring 2015.
