Rowland Hill, 2nd Viscount Hill
Rowland Hill, 2nd Viscount Hill (10 May 1800 – 3 January 1875), known as Sir Rowland Hill, Bt, between 1824 and 1842, was a British peer and Tory politician. Background Hill was the son of Colonel John Hill, eldest son of Sir John Hill, 3rd Baronet. His mother was Elizabeth, daughter of Philip Cornish, while the renowned military figures Rowland Hill, 1st Viscount Hill, Thomas Noel Hill, Robert Chambre Hill and Clement Delves Hill were his uncles. He was educated at Oriel College, Oxford, where he graduated MA in 1820. Political career Hill was returned to Parliament for Shropshire in 1821, a seat he held until 1832, when the constituency was abolished. He then represented North Shropshire between 1832 and 1842. He succeeded his grandfather as fourth Baronet of Hawkstone in 1824. In 1842 he also succeeded his uncle as second Viscount Hill according to a special remainder in the letters patent and was able to take a seat in the House of Lords. Geoffrey Hill (cricketer, Born 1837)
Geoffrey Richard Clegg Hill (17 April 1837 – 4 May 1891) was an English first-class cricketer and British Army officer. The son of Rowland Hill, 2nd Viscount Hill, he was born in April 1837 at Hawkstone Hall in Weston-under-Redcastle, Shropshire. He was educated at Harrow School. After completing his education, Hill purchased the rank of cornet in the Royal Horse Guards in December 1854, later purchasing the rank of lieutenant in March 1857. A keen cricketer, Hill made a single appearance in first-class cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) against Hampshire at Lord's in 1861. He batted once in the match, making 3 runs in the MCC first innings before being dismissed caught and bowled by Henry Holmes. He played below first-class at county level for Shropshire between 1867-73 and club level for Wem and Hawkstone. Viscount Hill
Viscount Hill, of Hawkstone and of Hardwicke in the County of Salop, is a title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom. It was created in 1842 for General Rowland Hill. He had already been created Baron Hill, of Almaraz and of Hawkstone in the County of Salop, in 1814, with remainder to the heirs male of his body, and Baron Hill, of Almarez and of Hawkestone and Hardwicke in the County of Salop, in 1816, with remainder to the heirs male of his elder brother John Hill. The viscountcy was created with the same special remainder. On the first Viscount's death in 1842, the barony of 1814 became extinct as he had no male issue, while he was succeeded in the barony of 1816 and the Viscountcy according to the special remainders by his nephew Sir Rowland Hill, 4th Baronet. His son, the 3rd Viscount, sat as a Conservative Member of Parliament for Shropshire North. Orlando George Charles Bridgeman, 3rd Earl of Bradford, PC, DL (24 April 1819 – 12 March 1898), styled Viscount Newport between 1825 and 1865, was a British courtier and Conservative politician. In a ministerial career spanning over thirty years, he notably served as Lord Chamberlain of the Household between 1866 and 1868 and as Master of the Horse between 1874 and 1880 and again between 1885 and 1886. Life Born into an Anglo-Irish family as William Gore, the eldest son of William Gore, M.P., of Woodford, County Leitrim, he was the great-great-grandson of William Gore, third and youngest son of Sir Arthur Gore, 1st Baronet, of Newtown, second son of Sir Paul Gore, 1st Baronet, of Magharabag, whose eldest son Paul was the grandfather of Arthur Gore, 1st Earl of Arran. John Cotes (1799-1874) was Whig MP for North Shropshire, at the time a two-member constituency, from the general election of 1832 to 1835.
