Route 146 is a state road that serves as a scenic alternative to US 1 between Branford and Guilford in the U.S. state of Connecticut. Route 146 is long, with in Branford and in Guilford. Route description Route 146 begins in Branford as Main Street, splitting off from West Main Street (US 1) just east of the connector road to I-95 at Exit 53. It heads east towards Branford Center and shifts to South Main Street as it passes behind the Branford Green. At the end of the street, Route 146 turns south onto Montowese Street, becoming South Montowese Street and Sybil Avenue as it proceeds southward towards the Indian Neck section of the town at the shore of Long Island Sound. The road then bears east along the shore as Limewood Avenue, Hotchkiss Grove Road, Elizabeth Street, and Pine Orchard Road, heading into the Pine Orchard section of town. Branford Center is a neighborhood and census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Branford, Connecticut, United States. The CDP encompasses the traditional town center area (roughly the area bounded by U.S. Route 1, the Amtrak railroad tracks, and the Branford River) and the area known as Branford Point (the portion of the CDP south of the railroad tracks). The population of the CDP (including Branford Point) was 5,819 at the 2010 census. Route 77 is a state highway in southern Connecticut. It is a state-designated scenic road and runs from the Guilford town green, through North Guilford, into the town center of Durham. Route description Route 77 begins at an intersection with Route 146 at the Guilford town green as Whitfield Street. It runs around the west side of the green, then shifts to Church Street as it leaves the green. Route 77 crosses US 1 and I-95 (at exit 58), becoming the main road through the northern part of Guilford, past Lake Quonnipaug. Between I-95 and the Durham town line, Route 77 is known as Durham Road. 1932 State Highway Renumbering (Connecticut)
In 1932, the Highway Department of the U.S. state of Connecticut (now known as the Connecticut Department of Transportation), decided to completely renumber all its state highways. The only exceptions were the U.S. Highways and some of the New England Interstate Routes. Between 1922 and 1932, Connecticut used a state highway numbering system shared with the other New England states. Major inter-state trunk routes used numbers in the 1-99 range, primary intrastate highways used numbers in the 100-299 range, and secondary state highways used numbers in the 300+ range. In 1926, at the behest of the American Association of State Highway Officials, four of the nine New England Interstate Routes that passed through Connecticut became U.S. Routes.
