Rotterdam Design Award
The Rotterdam Design Award (Rotterdamse Designprijs) was an annual and later biennial design award in the Netherlands from 1993 to 2013. In the first five editions the work of the nominees were exhibited in the Kunsthal, and afterwards in Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The winners were selected by an international jury during this exhibition, and were announced at the end of the exhibition. The winners received an amount of € 20,000, which could be spent freely. Kunsthal
The Kunsthal ( en, Art Hall) is an art museum in Rotterdam. It opened in 1992. Overview The museum is situated in the Museumpark of Rotterdam next to the Natuurhistorisch Museum Rotterdam, and in the vicinity of the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. Entrance to the Kunsthal is from the Westzeedijk. The building was designed by the Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas together with project architect Fuminori Hoshino of the architectural firm OMA ( Office for Metropolitan Architecture). Wim van Krimpen was its first director. The Kunsthal has no permanent collection, but organises a wide range of temporary exhibits. The large space available allows various exhibits in parallel. It houses seven exhibition spaces, a characteristic auditorium, and a café. The range of exhibitions presented at the Kunsthal ranges from 20th century masters to current contemporary art movements. Waag Society
The Waag (" weigh house") is a 15th-century building on Nieuwmarkt square in Amsterdam. It was originally a city gate and part of the walls of Amsterdam. Later it served as a guildhall, museum, fire station and anatomical theatre, among other things. The Waag is the oldest remaining non-religious building in Amsterdam. The building was listed as a national monument (''rijksmonument'') in 1970. The Waag is depicted in Rembrandt's 1632 painting ''The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp''. The surgeons' guild commissioned this painting for their guildhall in the Waag. Hella Jongerius
Hella Jongerius (born 30 May 1963 in De Meern, Utrecht) is a Dutch industrial designer. Biography Jongerius was born in De Meern, a village to the west of Utrecht in the Netherlands in 1963. From 1988 to 1993, she studied design at the Design Academy Eindhoven. After graduating, she worked for a few projects at Droog Design. She founded her own studio called Jongeriuslab in Rotterdam in 1993. She taught at the Design Academy Eindhoven as head of the department Living/Atelier (1988–1993). Gert Staal
Gert Staal (1956) is a Dutch researcher, publicist and critic in the fields of design, architecture and urban design. Educated as linguist and art historian over the years he was active as journalist, editor, author, manager and teacher particularly in the those fields of Dutch design. Biography Staal was born in 1956, and received his MA in Dutch language and art history at the University of Amsterdam. In 1981 Staal began working as a design journalist for ''de Volkskrant,'' where he wrote about design events on a nearly weekly basis. In late 1983, he moved to the ''NRC Handelsblad,'' where he continued to write about design-related topics for a period of more than five years. In the 1990s he continued to write occasionally for the ''NRC Handelsblad'', for ''de Volkskrant'', and for ''Trouw''. Bruce Mau D.Litt. (born October 25, 1959) is a Canadian designer and educator. He began his career a graphic designer and has since applied his design methodology to architecture, art, museums, film, eco-environmental design, education, and conceptual philosophy. Mau is the chief executive officer of Massive Change Network, a Chicago-based design consultancy he co-founded with his wife, Bisi Williams. In 2015, he became the Chief Design Officer at Freeman, a global provider of brand experiences. Mau is also a professor and has taught at multiple institutions in the United States and Canada. Peter Noever
Peter Noever (born 1 May 1941) is an Austrian designer and curator–at–large of art, architecture and media. From 1986 to 2011 he was the artistic director and CEO of MAK— Austrian Museum of Applied Arts and Contemporary Art in Vienna. Life Noever was born in Innsbruck. Leidschendam
Leidschendam () is a town and former municipality in the province of South Holland of the Netherlands. Along with Voorburg and Stompwijk, it is part of the municipality Leidschendam-Voorburg. Ingo Maurer
Ingo Maurer (12 May 1932 – 21 October 2019) was a German industrial designer who specialised in the design of lamps and light installations. He was nicknamed "poet of light". Life Maurer was born in Reichenau Island, Lake Constance, Germany, and was the son of a fisherman and grew up there with four siblings. After an apprenticeship as typesetter, he studied graphic design in Munich. In 1960 Maurer left Germany for the U.S., where he worked in New York and San Francisco as a freelance graphic designer, including for IBM.
