Rosmarie Honegger
Rosmarie Honegger (born 1947) is a Swiss lichenologist and Emeritus Professor at the University of Zurich. Academic career Honegger was born in 1947 and grew up in Emmental, Switzerland. She graduated with a PhD in biology from the University of Basel in 1976. In 1977 she accepted a postdoctoral research position in the Institute of Plant Biology at the University of Zurich. After a time working at the University of California, Riverside she returned to Switzerland as professor in the Institute of Plant Biology of the University of Zurich. Honegger retired in 2009 as Emeritus Professor. From 2011 she worked with Dianne Edwards, a palaeobotanist at the Cardiff University on lichen fossils found on the Welsh borderland. Honegger was awarded the International Association for Lichenology's Acharius Medal for her lifetime work in lichenology in 2008 and in 2015 she received the Linnean Medal recognising her contribution to the natural sciences. Jan Eric Ingvar Kärnefelt (born 1944) is a Swedish lichenologist. Early life and education Kärnefelt was born in Gothenburg, Sweden in 1944. His initial goal in his higher-level studies at University of Cologne in 1966–1967 was to become a dentist. He changed courses in 1968, turning instead to biology at the University of Gothenburg in 1968. Gunnar Degelius, his first teacher during undergraduate studies in botany in 1968, inspired him and others. After Degelius' retirement in 1969, Ingvar continued his studies at Lund University, where Hans Runemark held a position in systematic botany. In 1971 he met Ove Almborn, who became his supervisor. In 1979, he defended his thesis titled "The brown fruticose species of ''Cetraria''". The thesis was later awarded a prize for the best doctoral dissertation in botany at Lund University during a 5-year period by the Royal Physiographic Society in Lund. International Association For Lichenology
The International Association for Lichenology (IAL) is an organisation that encourages the understanding of lichens and lichenology, and promotes their study and conservation worldwide. It unites lichenologists across the globe, as well as national and regional organisations into one group. It is affiliated to the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS). The IAL organises field courses and excursions, as well as symposia which are the biggest events in lichenology on the international level. The 8th International Symposium will be held in Helsinki, Finland, in August 2016. The IAL publishes a biennial journal, the International Lichenological Newsletter which was the raison d'etre for the IAL being formed in 1967 in order to provide a forum for lichenologists worldwide to communicate with one other.
