Roskilde Fjord
Roskilde Fjord is the fjord north of Roskilde, Denmark. It is a long branch of the Isefjord. Cities The cities Frederiksværk, Frederikssund, Jægerspris, Jyllinge and Roskilde (including Himmelev), (home to the famous Roskilde Festival), all have coastline at Roskilde Fjord. Viking Time During the Viking time around 1000 AD the people of Roskilde decided to sink a number of their ships in the fjord at Skuldelev in order to prevent the Vikings from coming in and raiding. Originally five were discovered; but while extending the museum that houses these finds another nine were uncovered. Roskilde Fjord And Cathedral
Roskilde ( , ) is a city west of Copenhagen on the Danish island of Zealand. With a population of 51,916 (), the city is a business and educational centre for the region and the 10th largest city in Denmark. It is governed by the administrative council of Roskilde Municipality. Roskilde has a long history, dating from the pre-Christian Viking Age. Its UNESCO-listed Gothic cathedral, now housing 39 tombs of the Danish monarchs, was completed in 1275, becoming a focus of religious influence until the Reformation. With the development of the rail network in the 19th century, Roskilde became an important hub for traffic with Copenhagen, and by the end of the century, there were tobacco factories, iron foundries and machine shops. Roskilde Festival
The Roskilde Festival is a Danish music festival held annually south of Roskilde. It is one of the largest music festivals in Europe and the largest in the Nordic countries. It was created in 1971 by two high school students and a promoter. In 1972, the festival was taken over by the Roskilde Foundation, which has since run the festival as a non-profit organization for development and support of music, culture and humanism. In 2014, the Roskilde Foundation provided festival participants with the opportunity to nominate and vote upon which organizations should receive funds raised by the festival. The Roskilde Festival was Denmark's first music-oriented festival created for hippies, and today covers more of the mainstream youth from Scandinavia and the rest of Europe. In physical geography, a fjord or fiord () is a long, narrow inlet with steep sides or cliffs, created by a glacier. Roskilde Roklub (English: Roskilde Rowing Club) is a rowing club based in Roskilde, Denmark. Its home water is Roskilde Fjord. History The club was founded in 1890. International performances Carl-Ebbe Andersen, Tage Henriksen, and Finn Pedersen won gold in Rowing, Men's Coxed Pairs at the 1948 Summer Olympics. Thomas Ebert won a bronze medal in Men's lightweight coxless four at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and gold at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens and 2008 Summer Olympics. Viking Ship Museum (Roskilde)
The Viking Ship Museum ( da, Vikingeskibsmuseet) in Roskilde is Denmark's national ship museum for ships of the Prehistory, prehistoric and Middle Ages, medieval period. The main focus of the museum is a permanent exhibition of the Skuldelev ships, five original Viking ships excavated nearby in 1962. The Viking Ship Museum also conducts research and educates researchers in the fields of maritime history, Maritime archaeology, marine archaeology and experimental archaeology. Various academic conferences are held here and there is a research library in association with the museum. Skuldelev Ships
The Skuldelev ships are five original Viking ships recovered from the waterway of Peberrenden at Skuldelev, north of Roskilde in Denmark. In 1962, the remains of the submerged ships were excavated in the course of four months. The recovered pieces constitute five types of Viking ships and have all been dated to the 11th century. They are thought to have been sunk to prevent attacks from the sea. When the remains were unearthed, they were thought to comprise six ships, but "Skuldelev 2" and "Skuldelev 4" were later discovered to be parts of one ship. Together, the five Skuldelev ships provide a good source of information about the shipbuilding traditions of the late Viking Age and are now exhibited at the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde. Blockship
A blockship is a ship deliberately sunk to prevent a river, channel, or canal from being used. It may either be sunk by a navy defending the waterway to prevent the ingress of attacking enemy forces, as in the case of at Portland Harbour in 1914; or it may be brought by enemy raiders and used to prevent the waterway from being used by the defending forces, as in the case of the three old cruisers , and scuttled during the Zeebrugge raid in 1918 to prevent the port from being used by the German navy. An early use was in 1667, during the Dutch Raid on the Medway and their attempts to do likewise in the Thames during the Second Anglo-Dutch War, when a number of warships and merchant ships commandeered by the Royal Navy were sunk in those rivers to attempt to stop the attacking forces. Himmelev
Himmelev is a largely residential area in the municipality of Roskilde Municipality, Roskilde in Denmark and is contiguous with Roskilde. The population in the :da:Himmelev Sogn, parish is around 14,000 (2022). It is on the eastern shore of the southernmost part of Roskilde Fjord. It contains primarily subdivisions with single family homes, but one of the three high schools in Roskilde, Himmelev Gymnasium, is also located the town. Jyllinge
Jyllinge is a town located on the eastern shores of Roskilde Fjord, midway between Roskilde and Frederikssund, Roskilde Municipality, some 40 km west of Copenhagen, Denmark. The original fishing village is surrounded by large areas of Single-family detached homes. As of 1 January 2022, it had a population of 10,134. History Jyllinge is first mentioned in 1171 as ''Iuleghe'', possibly derived from ''Iula'', meaning "the yellow', an old name for Lilleø, and from Old Danish ''eki'', meaning "oak forest". The village consisted of a mixture of fishermen and farmers. The fishing took place from small boats on the fiord and was mainly for eel. In 1861, the village had 28 fishermen and 21 boats.
