Ron Benson
Ronald Benson (26 March 1925 – 6 November 1997) was an English professional footballer who played as a winger in the Football League for York City, and in non-League football for Archbishop Holgates Old Boys and Frickley Colliery. After retiring he became a union representative in the British Rail workshops in York, and stood as the Conservative Party candidate for Wakefield Wakefield is a cathedral city in West Yorkshire, England located on the River Calder. Acomb, North Yorkshire
Acomb , is a village and suburb within the City of York unitary authority area, to the western side of York, England. It covers the site of the original village of the same name, which is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It is bordered by the suburbs of Holgate, to the east, Clifton, to the north and Woodthorpe to the south. The boundary to the west abuts the fields close to the A1237, York Outer Ring Road. Historically part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, Acomb was incorporated into the City of York in 1934. Formerly a farming village, Acomb expanded over the centuries to become a dormitory area for workers in heavy industry, such as rail engineering, in the 19th and 20th centuries and more recently for a more diverse workforce. The 1966 United Kingdom general election was held on 31 March 1966. The result was a landslide victory for the Labour Party led by incumbent Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Wilson decided to call a snap election since his government, elected a mere 17 months previously, in 1964, had an unworkably small majority of only four MPs. The Labour government was returned following this snap election with a much larger majority of 98 seats. This was the last general election in which the voting age was 21; Wilson's government passed an amendment to the Representation of the People Act in 1969 to include eligibility to vote at age 18, which was in place for the next general election in 1970.
