''Rommel Calls Cairo'' (german: Rommel ruft Kairo) is a 1959 West German war thriller film directed by Wolfgang Schleif and starring Adrian Hoven, Elisabeth Müller and Peter van Eyck.Davidson & Hake p. 54 It is based on a real incident from the North African Campaign during the Second World War. The film's sets were designed by the art directors Ludwig Reiber and Hans Strobel. It was shot on location in Egypt. Wolfgang Schleif
Wolfgang Schleif (14 May 1912 – 21 August 1984) was a German film director, screenwriter and film editor. Life and career Wolfgang Schleif studied philosophy, psychology and pedagogy at the University of Leipzig. In 1934 he passed the State Examination for teachers at the Volksschule. But then he took classes at the Acting School of the Deutsches Theater in Berlin, where he was trained in directing. Schleif began working in film in 1935. By 1938, he was an assistant director. In 1939, he became a screenwriter and eventually an editor. Among his assignments, he was one of the editors of the propaganda films ''Jud Süß'' (1940) and '' Kolberg'' (1945). In 1947, Schleif was joined the DEFA film studio, making his directorial debut in 1948 with the anti-capitalist production '. Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel () (15 November 1891 – 14 October 1944) was a German field marshal during World War II. Popularly known as the Desert Fox (, ), he served in the ''Wehrmacht'' (armed forces) of Nazi Germany, as well as serving in the ''Reichswehr'' of the Weimar Republic, and the army of German Empire, Imperial Germany. Rommel was a highly decorated officer in World War I and was awarded the ''Pour le Mérite'' for his actions on the Italian Front (World War I), Italian Front. In 1937, he published his classic book on military tactics, ''Infantry Attacks'', drawing on his experiences in that war. Paul Karl Heinrich Klinksik (14 June 1907, Essen – 14 November 1971, Munich) was a German stage and film actor who also worked in radio drama and soundtrack dubbing. Johannes Eppler (1914–1999), also known as Hans Eppler, John Eppler, and Hussein Gaafer, was a World War II Abwehr spy, a German who had been raised in Egypt by his Egyptian stepfather. One of Rommel's spies during the North African campaign in World War II, Operation Salaam led by László Almásy spirited Eppler and Hans-Gerd Sandstede into Cairo although they were both arrested soon after arrival in July 1942. Eppler is the subject of MI5 file KV 2/1467. After World War II, Eppler told dramatic stories about his spy exploits during the war, but historians have shown that his actual work was ineffective and amateurish. Fictional portrayals Eppler is the subject of a book by Leonard Mosley, ''The Cat and the Mice'', and is again referenced in Mosley's ''The Druid''. ''Foxhole in Cairo'' is a 1960 British war film directed by John Llewellyn Moxey and based on a novel by Leonard Mosley itself based upon the real-life Operation Salaam.
