Romerike
Romerike is a traditional district located north-east of Oslo, in what is today south-eastern Norway. It consists of the Viken municipalities Lillestrøm, Lørenskog, Nittedal, Rælingen and Aurskog-Høland in the southern end (Nedre Romerike), and Ullensaker, Gjerdrum, Nannestad, Nes, Eidsvoll and Hurdal in the northern end (Øvre Romerike). Etymology The Old Norse form of the name was ', but the name must be much older (see below). The first element is the genitive plural of ' m ("person from Romerike"); the final element is ' n ("kingdom, reich"; cf. Ringerike, RÃ¥nrike). In the '' Hversu Noregr byggdist'' and in '' Thorsteins saga VÃkingssonar'', the name is attributed to the mythical king Raum the Old (''Raumr inn gamli''). Nedre Romerike is the lower (southern) part of the Romerike traditional district in Akershus, Norway. It consists of the municipalities Fet, Lørenskog, Nittedal, Rælingen, Skedsmo, Sørum and Aurskog-Høland. It make up the area served by Nedre Romerike District Court, based in Lillestrøm. Gjerdrum () is a municipality in Akershus in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Romerike. Gjerdrum borders the municipalities of Nannestad, Nittedal, and Ullensaker, and Lillestrøm. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Ask. Name and coat of arms The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old Gjerdrum farm ( Norse ''Gerðarvin''). The first element is the genitive of a river name ''Gerð'' and the last element is ''vin'' 'meadow, pasture'. The river name is derived from the Norse word ''garðr'' meaning 'fence' and so the meaning is 'the river whose function is a fence (and/or as a border)'. The coat of arms is from modern times. Hurdal is a municipality in Akershus in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Romerike. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Hurdal. Hurdal is located about north of Oslo, along the lake Hurdalsjøen. Fjellsjøkampen is the highest hill in Akershus. The mountain Toppåsen is also located in the municipality. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Sundet. Lillestrøm
Lillestrøm is a municipality in Viken county. It is located in the traditional district of Romerike. With a population of 85,757 inhabitants, it is the fourth most populated municipality in Viken. It was founded on 1 January 2020 as a merger between former municipalities Fet, Skedsmo and Sørum. The administrative centre of the municipality is the town of Lillestrøm. Nes is a municipality in Akershus in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Romerike. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Årnes. Name The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the old ''Nes'' farm (Old Norse: ''Nes'' which means "headland"), since the first church was built here. Rælingen is a village and municipality in Akershus in Viken county, Norway. It is part of the traditional region of Romerike. The administrative centre of the municipality is the village of Fjerdingby. Rælingen was separated from the municipality of Fet on 1 July 1929. General information Name The name is first mentioned around 1400 ("i Ræling"). It is probably an old district name (the name of the church site is Fjerdingby). The meaning of the name is unknown.
