Rome, Oregon
Rome, also called Rome Station after its sole business, is an unincorporated community in Malheur County, Oregon, United States. It is part of the Ontario, OR– ID Micropolitan Statistical Area. In the sparsely populated high desert of southeastern Oregon, Rome is immediately west of the Owyhee River on U.S. Route 95, approximately northeast of Burns Junction. Jordan Creek enters the river slightly downstream of Rome. The elevation of Rome is above sea level. Name According to ''Oregon Geographic Names'', Rome was named by William F. Stine for the nearby geologic formations that suggested the ruined temples of Rome, Italy. The -high Rome Cliffs, or "Pillars of Rome" are formations of fossil-bearing clay, measuring about long and wide. Post offices Rome's former post office was established in 1909. Leonard R. Yarmouth, Maine
Yarmouth is a town in Cumberland County, Maine, United States, twelve miles north of the state's largest city, Portland. When originally settled in 1636, as North Yarmouth, it was part of Massachusetts, and remained as such for 213 years. In 1849, twenty-nine years after Maine's admittance to the Union as the twenty-third state, it was incorporated as the Town of Yarmouth. Rome State Airport is a public use airport located 20 nautical miles (23 mi, 37 km) southwest of the central business district of Rome, in Malheur County, Oregon, United States. It is owned by the Oregon Department of Aviation. History The airport was built by the United States Army Air Forces about 1942, and was known as Rome Flight Strip. Marion County is one of the 36 counties in the U.S. state of Oregon. The population was 345,920 at the 2020 census, making it the fifth-most populous county in Oregon. Jordan Valley, Oregon
Jordan Valley is a city in Malheur County, Oregon, United States. It is part of the Ontario, OR– ID Micropolitan Statistical Area. The city lies along Jordan Creek, a tributary of the Owyhee River; the creek is named for a 19th-century prospector, Michael M. Jordan. The population was 181 at the 2010 census. History Indigenous peoples Northern Paiute people were the first in the area, frequenting nearby mountains and streambeds to find or follow food sources. When early settlers arrived, conflict developed over local resources, eventually escalating to the Snake War.
