The Romanian National Opera, Iași ( ro, Opera Națională Română din Iași) is a public opera and ballet institution in Iași, Romania. It is one of the national opera companies of Romania. The first performance at the Iași Opera was on 3 November 1956 (the inaugural concert being Tosca by Giacomo Puccini), in the building of the Iași National Theatre, a historic monument that had been built between 1894–1896 by the Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer. Iași
Iași ( , , ; also known by other alternative names), also referred to mostly historically as Jassy ( , ), is the second largest city in Romania and the seat of Iași County. Located in the historical region of Moldavia, it has traditionally been one of the leading centres of Romanian social, cultural, academic and artistic life. The city was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia from 1564 to 1859, then of the United Principalities from 1859 to 1862, and the capital of Romania from 1916 to 1918. The George Enescu National University of Arts ( ro, Universitatea Națională de Arte „George Enescu”) is a public university in Iași, Romania, founded in 1860. It was named in honor of the composer George Enescu. History The institution was established on 1 October 1860, as the ''Music and Declamation School'', by decree of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, followed 26 days later, by the foundation of the School for Sculpture and Painting. In October 1864, Cuza approved the Charter for the ''Music and Declamation Conservatory'' and the Charter for the ''National Schools of Fine Arts'' (establishing the departments of painting, sculpture, gravure, architecture and the art of landscape architecture). The history of opera in Romania dates back to the 18th century when French, Italian, and German touring companies began performing the standard European repertoire of the day in the main cities of Romania. Home-grown opera companies both professional and amateur began forming in the 19th century. In 1843 a purpose built theatre for the performance of Italian opera was established in Bucharest. Its inaugural performance was Bellini's ''Norma''. Opera was also performed by the students at the conservatory established by The Philharmonic Society of Bucharest. The Iași National Theatre (or Vasile Alecsandri National Theater; in Romanian: Teatrul Național Vasile Alecsandri) in Iași, Romania, is the oldest national theatre and one of the most prestigious theatrical institutions in Romania.
