Edmundston is a city in Madawaska County, New Brunswick, Canada. On 1 January 2023, Edmundston will expanded, annexing the village of Rivière-Verte and parts of the local service districts of the parish of Saint-Jacques and the parish of Saint-Joseph. History During the early colonial period, the area was a camping and meeting place of the Maliseet (Wolastoqiyik) Nation during seasonal migrations. From the mid to late eighteenth century, one of the largest Maliseet villages had been established at Madawaska and had become a refuge site for other Wabanaki peoples. The Maliseet village was originally located near the falls at the confluence of the Madawaska and Saint John Rivers. Currently, the City of Edmundston surrounds a federal Indian Reserve (St. Basile 10/Madawaska Maliseet First Nation). Joseph-Aurèle Plourde, (January 12, 1915 – January 5, 2013) was a Canadians, Canadian Roman Catholic Archbishop of Ottawa, Ontario. Early years Archbishop Plourde was born in Saint-François-de-Madawaska, New Brunswick to Antoine Plourde and Suzanne Albert, the eighth of 11 children. and attended the University of St. Joseph's College, St. Joseph College in Memramcook, New Brunswick and Atlantic School of Theology, Holy Heart Seminary in Halifax (former city), Halifax, Nova Scotia before becoming ordained as a priest in 1944. Claude Champagne (27 May 1891 – 21 December 1965) was a French Canadian composer, teacher, pianist, and violinist. Early life and education Born as Joseph-Arthur-Adonaï Claude Champagne in Montreal, Quebec, Champagne began piano and theory at 10 with Orpha-F. Deveaux, and continued with Romain-Octave Pelletier I and Alexis Contant at the Conservatoire national de musique. At 14, he studied violin with Albert Chamberland. François Thibodeau, C.I.M., (July 27, 1939 – June 26, 2023) was a Canadian Roman Catholic prelate and member of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary (C.I.M.), also known as the Eudists. He served as the fifth Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Edmundston in New Brunswick from his appointment on October 20, 1993, by Pope John Paul II until his retirement in 2009. Thibodeau was born on July 27, 1939, in Saint-Odilon-de-Cranbourne, Quebec. He studied philosophy at the Sacré-Coeur Seminary in Charlesbourg, Quebec City, and Catholic theology at St. Jean-Eudes Scholasticate in Pointe-Gatineau.
