The Roman Catholic Diocese of Lugazi ( la, Lugasien(sis)) is a diocese located in the city of Lugazi in the ecclesiastical province of Kampala in Uganda. History * November 30, 1996: Established as Diocese of Lugazi from the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Kampala. Current bishop The Right Reverend Christopher Kakooza was born at Nsambya Hospital on 15 November 1952. His parents lived at Lusaze, Kyaddondo County, in the Archdiocese of Kampala. He was ordained priest on 3 June 1983 at St Mbaaga's Major Seminary, Ggaba, as one of the pioneer group of the seminary and appointed auxiliary bishop on 30 January 1999. His episcopal ordination took place on 17 April 1999 at Rubaga Cathedral. He was appointed as the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lugazi, on 4 November 2014, by Pope Francis, replacing Bishop Matthias Ssekamanya, who retired. The Archdiocese of Kampala is the Metropolitan See for the Roman Catholic Ecclesiastical province of Kampala in Uganda. History The present Kampala Archdiocese is the result of territorial changes: * Victoria Nyanza Vicariate (1883). It was established by the Holy See in 1883 and was entrusted to the Missionaries of Africa commonly known as the White Fathers. Rubaga became the seat of the Bishop. * Upper Nile Vicariate (1894). The ''Daily Monitor'' is a Ugandan independent daily newspaper. Its name is shared by the ''Saturday Monitor'' and ''Sunday Monitor'', which are also published by Monitor Publications Limited. Mukono is one of the districts in the Central Region of Uganda. The town of Mukono is home to the district's main commercial center and district headquarters. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga (19 January 1953 – 3 April 2021) was a Ugandan Roman Catholic Prelate who served as Archbishop of Kampala from 2006 to his death. From 1996 to 2006, he served as Bishop of Kasana–Luweero. Background and education Lwanga was born on 19 January 1953 at Kyabakadde Village, in Naggalama Parish, in present-day Mukono District in the Buganda Region of Uganda, within the Diocese of Lugazi. Lwanga attended Kyabakadde Primary School. He entered Nyenga Seminary in 1964. Between 1972 and 1974, he studied at Katigondo National Major Seminary, in present-day Kalungu District.
