The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Madras and Mylapore/Madras and Myliapor ( la, Madraspolitan(us) et Meliaporen(sis)) is an archdiocese based in the city of Madras (now ''Chennai''), in India. It took also the name of the ancient diocese of Mylapore, now a part of Chennai. Padroado
The ''Padroado'' (, "patronage") was an arrangement between the Holy See and the Kingdom of Portugal and later the Portuguese Republic, through a series of concordats by which the Holy See delegated the administration of the local churches and granted some theocratic privileges to Portuguese monarchs. The Portuguese ''Padroado'' dates from the beginning of the Portuguese maritime expansion in the mid-15th century and was confirmed by Pope Leo X in 1514. At various times the system was called ''Padroado Real'' (Royal patronage), ''Padroado Ultramarino Português'' (Portuguese Overseas Patronage) and, since 1911 (following the Portuguese Law on the Separation of Church and State), ''Padroado Português do Oriente'' (Portuguese Patronage of the East). Joseph Colgan
Bishop Joseph Colgan, DD (1 April 1824 – 13 February 1911), was an Irish born Roman Catholic Archbishop of Madras, India. Biography Born on 1 April 1824 in Donore, County Westmeath, he studied in Navan, and for the priesthood in Maynooth College St Patrick's Pontifical University, Maynooth ( ga, Coláiste Naoimh Phádraig, Maigh Nuad), is the "National Seminary for Ireland" (a Roman Catholic college), and a pontifical university, located in the town of Maynooth, from Dublin, Ireland. .... Colgan was ordained in 1846. In 1847, he moved to India, where he served as a school principal, and Army Chaplin and priest in the Madras Vicarate. Colgan served as a reverend for around 30 years, from 1851 to 1881, in the Arcot, Tamil Nadu, Arcot Cantonment, which at the time had a Catholic population of 2000.
