Roman Catholic Archdiocese Of Harare
The Archdiocese of Harare (Latin: ''Archidioecesis Hararensis'') is the Metropolitan See for the Roman Catholic Ecclesiastical province of Harare in Zimbabwe. Its ecclesiastic territory includes the city of Harare, and parts of the provinces of Manicaland, Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East, and Mashonaland West. The archdiocese is the metropolitan see for the Ecclesiastical Province of Harare, which covers northeastern Zimbabwe. The current archbishop is Robert Ndlovu. The mother church of the archdiocese is the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Harare. The archdiocese has 166 priests, including 56 diocesan priests and 110 religious priests, and 254 religious sisters who are members of various religious institutes as of 2019. Henri Depelchin
Henri Joseph Depelchin, SJ (also Henry Depelchin) (24 January 1822, Russeignies, East Flanders, Netherlands – 26 May 1900, Calcutta, District of West Bengal, British India), was a Belgian Jesuit priest and missionary in India and Africa. As a missionary, he was the first superior of the failed Zambesi Mission in Africa and the founder and first superior of the West Bengal Mission in India. As an educator, he was the founder and first director of three major colleges in India. Life Depelchin's biographies show 24 January 1822 as the date of his birth but the civil registers of Russignies show that Henri Joseph Depelchin was actually born on 28 January 1822. Apostolic Prefecture
An apostolic prefect or prefect apostolic is a priest who heads what is known as an apostolic prefecture, a 'pre-diocesan' missionary jurisdiction where the Catholic Church is not yet sufficiently developed to have it made a diocese. Although it usually has an (embryonal) see, it is often not called after such city but rather after a natural or administrative (in many cases colonial) geographical area. If a prefecture grows and flourishes, it may be elevated to an apostolic vicariate, headed by a titular bishop, in the hope that with time the region will generate enough Catholics and stability for its Catholic institutions, to warrant being established as a diocese. Both these stages remain missionary, hence exempt, i.e. directly subject to the Holy See (notably the Roman Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples), normally not part of an ecclesiastical province. The Vicariate Apostolic of Natal ( la, Vicariatus Apostolicus Natalensis) was a Roman Catholic missionary, quasi-diocesan jurisdiction in South Africa. Antecedents The history of the Catholic Church in South Africa goes back to 1660, when a French bishop and a few priests were saved from the wreck of the ''Marichal'' near the Cape of Good Hope. They were only allowed to land, not to minister to the few Catholics who were already in Cape Town. Only in 1803 a Catholic priest was permitted to say Mass in the Cape Colony. A mission '' sui iuris'', or in Latin ''missio sui iuris'' (plural ''missions sui iuris''); also spelled mission(s) sui juris), also known as an independent mission, is a rare type of Roman Catholic missionary pseudo-diocesan jurisdiction, ranking below an apostolic prefecture and an apostolic vicariate, in an area with very few Catholics, often desolate or remote. The clerical head is styled Ecclesiastical Superior and can be a regular cleric, titular or diocesan bishop, archbishop or even a cardinal, but if of episcopal rank often resides elsewhere (notably, in another diocese or the Vatican) in chief of his primary office there.
