Rolleston-on-Dove Railway Station
Rolleston-on-Dove railway station is a disused railway station built to serve Rolleston on Dove in Staffordshire. History The station was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway in 1894 as simply "Rolleston" but was renamed to avoid confusion with Rolleston Junction station. The line had been opened in 1848 and, from 1878, was shared by the Great Northern Railway (Great Britain) with its GNR Derbyshire and Staffordshire Extension . The station was about a mile from the village. It was provided with two brick-built platforms and timber buildings. Rolleston On Dove
Rolleston on Dove, also known simply as Rolleston, is a village in Staffordshire, England near Burton upon Trent. Sir Oswald Mosley, the founder of the British Union of Fascists spent some of his earlier years at the family seat here. Rolleston Hall, where Mosley lived, was sold by auction on 2 August 1923 for housing development. The lake and two of the entrance lodges remain. The family coat of arms are still displayed in what was originally the Victorian Commemoration Hall which is now Rolleston Club. Rolleston has an active group of residents (RODSEC) which organises many seasonal activities, including money raising events for local charities. Rolleston on Dove was served by a railway station which was opened by the North Staffordshire Railway on 1 November 1894. The station closed in 1949. East Staffordshire is a local government district with borough status in Staffordshire in England. It has two main towns: Burton upon Trent and Uttoxeter. The North Staffordshire Railway (NSR) was a British railway company formed in 1845 to promote a number of lines in the Staffordshire Potteries and surrounding areas in Staffordshire, Cheshire, Derbyshire and Shropshire. The company was based in Stoke-on-Trent and was nicknamed ''The Knotty''; its lines were built to the standard gauge of . The London Midland Region (LMR) was one of the six regions created on the formation of the nationalised British Railways (BR), and initially consisted of ex-London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) lines in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Rolleston Railway Station
Rolleston station is around half a mile from the small village of Rolleston, one of the Trent side villages close to Southwell in Nottinghamshire, England. The station is convenient for Southwell Racecourse, to which it is adjacent. History The station was opened on 4 August 1846 with services running between Nottingham and Lincoln. The branch line to Southwell was opened in 1847 but the Midland Railway suspended passenger services to Southwell for a while during the 1850s. These were restored from 1 August 1860 as the Midland Railway saw demand for a planned new line through Southwell to Mansfield. GNR Derbyshire And Staffordshire Extension
The Derbyshire and Staffordshire extension of the Great Northern Railway was an English railway network built by the GNR to get access to coal resources in the area to the north and west of Nottingham. The Midland Railway had obstructed the GNR in its attempts to secure a share of the lucrative business of transporting coal from the area, and in frustration the GNR built the line. The line was forked: it reached Pinxton in 1875 and a junction with the North Staffordshire Railway at Egginton, approaching Burton on Trent in 1878. The line cut through Derby, resulting in considerable demolition of housing there. West of Derby the line was primarily agricultural; thoughts that a long-distance connection might build up using the line were over-optimistic, although a limited long-distance goods traffic did run.
