Gustave Rolin-Jaequemyns
Gustave Henri Ange Hippolyte Rolin-Jaequemyns (31 January 1835 – 9 January 1902) was a Belgian lawyer, diplomat and Minister of the Interior (1878–1884) as a member of the Liberal Party (Belgium), Unitarian Liberal Party. Together with the Swiss jurist Gustave Moynier, he founded the Institut de Droit International and became its first ''Honorary President''. Even though his personal convictions were deeply religious, he is considered anticlerical because of his staunch defence of the separation of church and state. Serving as an advisor to Chulalongkorn, King Rama V of Thailand, he played a crucial role in the reformation of that country to modern western standards and was awarded the title ''Chaophraya, Chow Phya Abhai Raja'', the highest distinction ever granted to a foreigner. Jean Philippe Rolin (born June 14, 1949, Boulogne-Billancourt) is a French writer and journalist. He received the Albert Londres Prize for journalism in 1988, and his novel ''L'organisation'' received the Medicis award in 1996. His brother Olivier Rolin is also a writer. Jean Rolin (cardinal)
Jean (Jehan) Rolin (1408–1483) was a French bishop and Cardinal. His father, Nicolas Rolin, was ducal Chancellor of Burgundy, and lord of Authumes. Jean became a Cardinal in 1448, created by Pope Nicholas V, as part of diplomatic engagement between the Duchy of Burgundy and the Papacy, tending against France. Nicolas Rolin
Nicolas Rolin (1376–1462) was a leading figure in the history of Burgundy and France, becoming chancellor to Philip the Good (Philip III, Duke of Burgundy). Born into a bourgeois family in Autun, Rolin's first marriage in 1398 was part of a triple marriage of his widowed mother to a bourgeois of Beaune, accompanied by the marriages of her two sons to two daughters of the bridegroom, Perrenet Le Mairet. However all three of these brides were dead within a few years. He next married Marie des Landes, before 1407, a marriage which paved the way for his entry to the bourgeoisie of Paris. In 1422, Rolin was made chancellor by Philip the Good, a post he held for more than forty years as one of the principal architects of the monarch's success. The ''Madonna of Chancellor Rolin'' is an oil painting by the Early Netherlandish master Jan van Eyck, dating from around 1435. It is kept in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, and was commissioned by Nicolas Rolin, aged 60, chancellor of the Duchy of Burgundy, whose votive portrait takes up the left side of the picture, for his parish church, ''Notre-Dame-du-Chastel'' in Autun, where it remained until the church burnt down in 1793. After a period in Autun Cathedral, it was moved to the Louvre in 1805. Description The scene depicts the Virgin Mary crowned by a hovering Angel while she presents the Infants Jesus to Rolin. The Musée Rolin is an art museum in Autun, Burgundy, France. Created in 1878 on the initiative of the , it is located on the site of the former home of Chancellor Nicolas Rolin. Its collections range from Gallo-Roman archaeology to 20th century painting, and are spread over more than twenty rooms. The museum's collections are divided into four departments: archaeology, medieval art, regional history and fine arts (17th to 20th century). Rolling is a type of motion that combines rotation (commonly, of an axially symmetric object) and translation of that object with respect to a surface (either one or the other moves), such that, if ideal conditions exist, the two are in contact with each other without sliding.
