Rolfe (surname)
The uncommon English surname Rolfe derives ultimately from the Old Scandinavian and Germanic pre 5th century personal name "Hrodwulf". This was composed of the elements "hrod", meaning "renown", and "wulf", a wolf. In Norse the contracted form was "Hrolfr", in Danish and Swedish "Rolf", and it is said that these personal names reached England first through their popularity with Scandinavian settlers before the Norman Conquest of 1066. The Normans thereafter introduced their own form of the name, generally found as "Rou" or "Roul" and often Latinised as "Rollo". *B. A. Rolfe's Chop House
Rolfe's Chop House is a Manhattan eating establishment located in the Financial District at 90 Fulton Street, established in 1848. Rolfe's Chop House is a memorable piece of the history of New York City. Earlier, the eatery was located in the Drake Building, 42 John Street. Thomas C. Innd (died October 13, 1914), a member of the Irish Historical Society and a New York City native, was proprietor at the John Street location. In February 1924 the store and basement of the present Fulton Street edifice were sold to Mary Drake and her son; following extensive improvements, the restaurant was opened as Rolfe's Chop House. Melville "Ernest" Fox (Feb 13, 1898 - Oct 1981) was proprietor in the mid-1930s until the restaurant's closure in 1967–68. During his tenure he was known for the “Ernest Special Salads” (“Made to order at the table”), which allowed Fox to foster relationships with the restaurant's noted clientele. Among the beverages served by the restaurant in the mid- ...

Rolfe Barn
The Rolfe Barn is a historic barn at 16 Penacook Street in the Penacook village of Concord, New Hampshire. The property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. The barn was first added to the New Hampshire State Register of Historic Places in 2003; additional structures on the property were added in 2005 (homestead) and 2008 (historic district). History Built c. 1790, the timber frame barn is probably the best-preserved barn of the period in the state. It is also distinctive for its construction methods and materials, which are rarely seen to survive in New Hampshire. The building's frame is made of oversized timbers, which were hand-hewn and then smoothed with an adze, a rare step not usually taken for barn construction. The building was framed as two separate three-bay English-style barns joined by a bay in the center, giving the frame seven bays in all. The interior layout of the barn matches this construction: the central area has two threshing bays, an ...

Rolf
Rolf is a male given name and a surname. It originates in the Germanic name ''Hrolf'', itself a contraction of ''Hrodwulf'' ( Rudolf), a conjunction of the stem words ''hrod'' ("renown") + ''wulf'' ("wolf"). The Old Norse cognate is ''Hrólfr''. An alternative but less common variation of ''Rolf'' in Norway is ''Rolv''. The oldest evidence of the use of the name Rolf in Sweden is an inscription from the 11th century on a runestone in Forsheda, Småland. The name also appears twice in the Orkneyinga sagas, where a scion of the jarls of Orkney, Gånge-Rolf, is said to be identical to the Viking Rollo who captured Normandy in 911. This Saga of the Norse begins with the abduction of Gói daughter by a certain Hrolf of Berg, (the Mountain). She is the daughter of Thorri, a Jotun of Gandvik, and sister of Gór and Nór. The latter is regarded as a first king and eponymous anchestor of Nórway. After a fierce duell (Holmgang) where none is able to overcome the other, Hrolf and Nór becom ...
