Roland Rotherham
Roland Rotherham (AKA ''Roly'' or ''Uncle Roly'') is a retired British writer and lecturer, who specializes in medieval legends and lore, especially those related to King Arthur, Merlin and Glastonbury. He also is an expert in historical cookery. A biographical account of Rotherham, in relation to a conference that he attended in 2009, describes him as "Prof. Roland Rotherham B.A.(Hons), M.A, Ph.D., Ed.D, M.I.H.G.S and states that holds degrees in Ancient and Medieval studies, Anglo-Saxon Culture, Heraldry, Anglo-Norman Culture, Ancient and Medieval Cultural Studies, and Education. Roland Rotherham At Elf Fantasy Fair 2010
Roland (; frk, *Hrōþiland; lat-med, Hruodlandus or ''Rotholandus''; it, Orlando or ''Rolando''; died 15 August 778) was a Frankish military leader under Charlemagne who became one of the principal figures in the literary cycle known as the Matter of France. The historical Roland was military governor of the Breton March, responsible for defending Francia's frontier against the Bretons. His only historical attestation is in Einhard's '' Vita Karoli Magni'', which notes he was part of the Frankish rearguard killed in retribution by the Basques in Iberia at the Battle of Roncevaux Pass. The story of Roland's death at Roncevaux Pass was embellished in later medieval and Renaissance literature. The United Kingdom's Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical Studies (IHGS) was founded in 1961 at Canterbury, Kent (its current location) by Cecil Humphery-Smith. Its library was created by donations from Humphery-Smith, Aylmer Buesst and others. The Institute promotes research, study, and training in all aspects of family history, including heraldry. Courses may be undertaken by full-time students, through a series of evening classes combined with other studies, or by a correspondence course. Archeon is an archeological open air and living museum in Alphen aan den Rijn, Netherlands that opened in 1994. In Alphen an ancient Roman military fortress has been established around 40, the settlement was given the Latin name Albaniana. Description The museum features various historical periods of Dutch history via archeological reconstructions and Historical reenactments. Educated actors called ''archeo-interpreters'' inform visitors about the living circumstances at those days. Visitors can engage in activities. Among the periods portrayed are the Stone Age, the Roman times and the Medieval period. Kasteel De Haar
De Haar Castle (Dutch: ''Kasteel de Haar'') is located in Utrecht, Netherlands. It is the largest castle in The Netherlands. Original site The oldest historical record of a building at the location of the current castle dates to 1391. In that year, the De Haar family received the castle and the surrounding lands as a fiefdom from Hendrik van Woerden. The castle remained in the ownership of the De Haar family until 1440, when the last male heir died childless. The castle then passed to the Van Zuylen family. In 1482, the castle was burned down and the walls were destroyed, except for the parts that did not have a military function. These parts probably were incorporated into the castle when it was rebuilt during the early 16th century. For the first time, it was organized in 2001 in the historical theme park Archeon.
