Hans-Joachim Roedelius (born 26 October 1934) is a German electronic musician and composer, best known as a co-founder of the influential 'kosmische' groups Cluster and Harmonia. He also performed in the ambient jazz trio Aquarello, and released several solo studio albums. Biography Early life Roedelius was born on 26 October 1934 in Berlin in the family of a dentist. He was an unwilling member of the German Youngsters in the Hitler Youth, membership being mandatory for all boys from the age of ten, and appeared in several propaganda films (''Faded Melody'' by Viktor Tourjansky in 1938 ; '' Riding for Germany'' by Arthur Maria Rabenalt in 1941). Roedelius and his mother Gertrud were evacuated from Berlin to a small hamlet in East Prussia. Cluster were a German musical duo consisting of Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius, formed in 1971 and associated with West Germany's krautrock and kosmische Musik, kosmische music scenes.Bush, John. Kluster
Kluster was a Berlin-based German experimental musical group formed in 1969 by Hans-Joachim Roedelius, Conrad Schnitzler, and Dieter Moebius. Their improvisational work presaged later industrial music. The original Kluster was short-lived, existing only from 1969 until mid-1971 when Conrad Schnitzler left and the remaining two members renamed themselves Cluster. Schnitzler later revived the band from 1971 to 1973 and then from 2007 until his death in 2011. Harmonia (band)
Harmonia was a West German musical "supergroup" formed in 1973 as a collaboration between members of two prominent krautrock bands: Cluster's Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius joined by Neu! guitarist Michael Rother. Living and recording in the rural village of Forst, the trio released two albums—''Musik von Harmonia'' (1974) and '' Deluxe'' (1975)—to limited sales before dissolving in 1976. In 1997, a series of shelved 1976 collaborations between Harmonia and British musician Brian Eno saw release as ''Tracks and Traces''; it was reissued with more unearthed material in 2009. Following the release of the live album ''Live 1974'' (2007), the trio reformed between 2007 and 2009. Aquarello was a musical group which blended ambient music and jazz. The trio included keyboardist Hans-Joachim Roedelius, based in Austria, and two Italian musicians, multi-instrumentalist Fabio Capanni, and saxophonist Nicola Alesini. ''Tracks and Traces'' is a collaborative album by German kosmische supergroup Harmonia (featuring Neu! guitarist Michael Rother and Cluster members Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius) and British musician Brian Eno, initially credited to Harmonia 76. Eno joined the group at Harmonia's studio in Forst, Germany for the September 1976 recording sessions. The results remained unreleased until November 1997, when they were compiled by the American Rykodisc label (originally in Germany by the label ''S3'', remastered by Eric Spitzer-Marlyn and Othmar Eichinger). In 2009, a reissue featuring additional tracks and alternative artwork was released, this time credited to Harmonia & Eno '76. ''Zuckerzeit'' (German: ''Sugar Time'') is the third studio album by German band Cluster, released in 1974 on Brain Records. It was co-produced by Michael Rother, their bandmate in side-project Harmonia. The music on ''Zuckerzeit'' marks a shift from Cluster's abrasive early work toward a more rhythmic, pop-oriented sound. ''Pitchfork'' ranked the album at number 63 on its list of the top 100 albums of the 1970s, while writer and musician Julian Cope included ''Zuckerzeit'' in his "Krautrock Top 50" list. ''Musik von Harmonia'' is the debut album from the influential German krautrock group Harmonia, released in January 1974 by Brain Records. Formed by the addition of Neu! guitarist Michael Rother to Cluster (the duo of Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius), they recorded the album from June to November 1973 in Cluster's Forst recording studio. It was self-produced by the group using a primitive mixer and three tape recorders. Background In 1973, Cluster were living in the rural West German village of Forst when Neu! guitarist Michael Rother visited, hoping the duo would serve as a backing band for Neu! live performances. ''Deluxe'' is the second album from the West German krautrock group Harmonia, consisting of Neu! guitarist Michael Rother and the duo Cluster (Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Dieter Moebius). It was recorded in June 1975 in Harmonia's studio in Forst, Germany. It was first released on the Brain Records label in 1975. ''Deluxe'' was produced by the band members and Conny Plank. The trio were also joined by drummer Mani Neumeier for the release. It was officially reissued in 2004 by Universal. Background For ''Deluxe'', Harmonia worked with producer Conny Plank (who had previously worked with both their main projects Cluster and Neu!). ''Sowiesoso'' (from german: sowieso, translation=anyway) is the fourth studio album by German electronic music band Cluster, released in 1976. It was Cluster's first release for Sky Records. ''Sowiesoso'' was recorded in just two days in Forst, Germany in 1976 and mixed at Conny's Studio in Wolperath. Background Brian Eno had worked with Dieter Moebius and Hans-Joachim Roedelius with Harmonia prior to the recording of ''Sowiesoso'' and worked with Cluster again on two albums in 1977 and 1978. The influence of the British ambient musician is clearly heard on the softer and more controlled sound of ''Sowiesoso''. Dieter Moebius
Dieter Moebius (16 January 1944 – 20 July 2015) was a Swiss-born German electronic musician and composer, best known as a member of the influential krautrock bands Cluster and Harmonia. Moebius was studying art at Berlin's Akademie Grafik and working as a restaurant cook when he met Conrad Schnitzler, founder of the Zodiak Free Arts Lab with Hans-Joachim Roedelius. The trio founded the improv group Kluster in 1969. After the departure of Schnitzler, the duo changed their name to Cluster and relocated to the countryside village of Forst, releasing influential albums such as ''Zuckerzeit'' (1974) and ''Sowiesoso'' (1976). Conrad Schnitzler
Conrad "Conny" Schnitzler (17 March 1937 – 4 August 2011) was a prolific German experimental musician associated with West Germany's 1970s krautrock movement. A co-founder of West Berlin's Zodiak Free Arts Lab, he was an early member of Tangerine Dream (1969–1970) and a founder of the band Kluster. He left Kluster in 1971, first working with his group Eruption and then focusing on solo works. Schnitzler participated in several collaborations with other electronic musicians.
