Rockingham (house)
Rockingham is a historic house that was the home of John Berrien (1711–1772) and George Washington's final headquarters of the Revolutionary War. It is located at 84 Laurel Avenue, Franklin Township in Somerset County, New Jersey. The house was originally located on the hillside east of the Millstone River at Rocky Hill. It has been moved within southern Franklin Township several times, and is now closer to Kingston than to Rocky Hill. The residence is a featured part of the Millstone River Valley Scenic Byway. The oldest portion of the house was built as a two-room, two-story saltbox style house ; a kitchen and additional rooms were added on in the early 1760s, expanding with the Berrien family. The first reference to the house as "Rockingham" does not appear until a 1783 newspaper advertisement to sell the house, a name given most likely in honor of the Marquess of Rockingham. Background On April 19, 1775, the militia of Massachusetts – later joined by the militias of other New England colonies – began a Siege of Boston, siege at Boston to prevent thousands of newly-arrived British troops from moving inland. On June 14, 1775, the Second Continental Congress created a Continental Army, to be formed out of the individual militias of the Thirteen Colonies. The next day, Congress created the position of Commander-in-Chief of the Continental Army, and unanimously elected Washington to that position. The Delaware and Raritan Canal (D&R Canal) is a canal in central New Jersey, built in the 1830s, that served to connect the Delaware River to the Raritan River. It was an efficient and reliable means of transportation of freight between Philadelphia and New York City, especially coal from the anthracite fields in eastern Pennsylvania, during much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. County Route 518 (CR 518) is a county highway in the U.S. state of New Jersey. The highway extends from Route 29/ Route 165 in Lambertville to Lincoln Highway (Route 27) in Franklin Township. It is also known as the Georgetown Franklin Turnpike. Route description CR 518 begins at an intersection with Route 29/ Route 165 in Lambertville, Hunterdon County, heading east on two-lane undivided Brunswick Avenue. Josephine Antoinette Ward was born in 1820 at Sing Sing, Westchester County, New York. She was the eldest child of Aaron Ward and Mary Watson Ward. Career She was a founding member of the Princeton Daughters of the American Revolution. She was the first benefactor of the Princeton University Graduate College With Kate McFarlane, Josephine helped preserve Rockingham, George Washington's final headquarters of the Revolutionary War, from demolition and decay. Personal life She was the second wife of Senator John R. Thomson from 1845 until his death in 1862. In 1878, Josephine became the second wife of former Governor of Maryland, Thomas Swann.
