Rochester Football Club
The Rochester Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Tigers'', is an Australian rules football and netball club, formed at a meeting held on 8 June 1874 at Tidy's Restdown Hotel. The club was formed with the purpose of soon "playing and beating Echuca". An intense rivalry that has endured ever since regardless of which competition each was playing in. Rochester FNC is based in the town of Rochester, Victoria. Its teams currently play in the Goulburn Valley League, where Rochester played for the first time in 1913. History The Rochester Football Club was formed in 1874 at Tidy's Rest Down Hotel, Rochester, with a committee elected and players resolved to practice with the intention of beating Echuca. On 1 June 1877 at Oliver's Cafe the Victorian Football Association was formed, with Rochester FC being one of the foundation clubs. Goulburn Valley Football League
The Goulburn Valley Football Netball League is an Australian rules football and netball competition based in the Goulburn Valley region of Victoria, Australia. It is a member of the Victorian Country Football League and has won the Victorian Country Football Championships in 2003 and 2005. History The league was initially called the Goulburn Valley District Football Association(GVDFA) and dates back to May, 1893. Clubs from the townships of Kyabram, Mooroopna, Nagambie, Nathalia, Numurkah, Shepparton, Shepparton Ramblers, Tatura, Undera and Wunghnu were present at the inaugural meeting. The five original clubs that made up the 1893 GVDFA draw were – Kyabram, Mooroopna, Shepparton, Shepparton Ramblers and Tatura with Mooroopna playing the Shepparton Ramblers in the 1893 GVDFA grand final. Echuca District Football Association
Echuca ( ) is a town on the banks of the Murray River and Campaspe River in Victoria, Australia. The border town of Moama is adjacent on the northern side of the Murray River in New South Wales. Echuca is the administrative centre and largest settlement in the Shire of Campaspe. As of the , Echuca had a population of 15,056, and the population of the combined Echuca and Moama townships was 22,568. Echuca lies within traditional Yorta Yorta country. Bruce Carruthers (footballer)
Bruce Carruthers (18 January 1903 – 8 March 1988) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). In 1923, Carruthers was involved in a long drawn out clearance dispute. Carruthers, a South Bendigo player applied for a clearance to Rochester, where he was working, but subsequently withdrew it and South Bendigo played Carruthers and a protest was lodged by Rochester. Rochester lost the appeal and Carruthers was allowed to play with South Bendigo. Basil McCormack
Basil Milton McCormack (3 August 1904 – 19 February 1973) was an Australian rules footballer who played in the Victorian Football League (VFL) between 1925 and 1936 for the Richmond Football Club. Gerry Beare
George Gerald Beare (3 July 1905 – 28 September 1983) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Between his two VFL stints he played for South Ballarat, and after leaving Melbourne he played for Kyneton. Beare was described as an "Old Xavier College boy" when he signed with Richmond from Rochester in 1924. Rowley Watt
Rowland Hill Watt (17 July 1898 – 27 July 1970) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Essendon in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Watt arrived at Essendon from Rochester and spent a season with Essendon Association before joining their VFL club. He was one of the small players in the team which saw them called the 'Mosquito Fleet' and he was a member of their 1923 and 1924 premiership sides. Although he started as a centreman he spent most of his time at Essendon either as a wingman, half forward flanker and occasionally roving. Watt returned to Rochester as captain-coach of Rochester in 1932. Paddy Mills (17 March 1884 – 12 July 1957) was an Australian rules footballer who played with Melbourne and Carlton in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Kevin Shinners (born 24 March 1945) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Shinners was recruited from Dandenong. He played 17 games for Richmond in the 1967 VFL season, including their semi final win over Carlton, but missed out on participating in the grand final, which they won.
