Robert White (also ''Whyte''; c. 1538 – 1574) probably born in Holborn, a district of London, was an English composer whose liturgical music to Latin texts is considered particularly fine. His surviving works include a setting of verses from Lamentations, and instrumental music for viols. Thomas Morley, in his ''A Plaine and Easie Introduction to Practicall Musicke'' (1597) extols him as one of the greatest English composers, equal to Orlando di Lasso. He notes White's bold harmonies, and includes him in a list of seven eminent Tudor composers that includes " Fayrfax, Taverner, Sheppard, Whyte, Parsons and Mr Byrd." Some MS partbooks now at Christ Church, Oxford dated about 1581 contain the tribute ''"Maxima musarum nostrarum gloria White' Tu peris, actemum sed tua musa manet"'' ("Thou, O White, greatest glory of our muses, dost perish, but thy muse endureth for ever"). Robert White (British Army Officer)
General Sir Robert White (21 February 1827 – 17 September 1902) was a British Army officer who became General Officer Commanding Eastern District. Military career White was commissioned into the 17th Light Dragoons on 15 October 1847, and was promoted to lieutenant the following year. Promoted to captain in 1852, he fought and was severely wounded at the Battle of Alma in September 1854 during the Crimean War. He was also badly wounded at the Battle of Balaclava in October 1854, when he had his horse shot under him. In 1857 he proceeded with his regiment to India, and served throughout the campaign in Central India 1858–1859, part of the time in command of a flying column. He was promoted to lieutenant-colonel in 1860, to colonel in 1865, and to major-general in 1870. He went on to be Commander of the 22nd Brigade, based at Norton Barracks in Worcestershire, in 1873 and General Officer Commanding Eastern District in September 1882. Robert Meadows White (1798–1865) was an English cleric and academic, holding the office of Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford University from 1834. Life Born on 8 January 1798, he was the eldest son of Robert Gostling White (died 18 October 1828), a solicitor at Halesworth in Suffolk, by his second wife, Elizabeth Meadows (died 25 September 1831); the solicitor John Meadows White was his younger brother. Robert White (engraver)
Robert White (1645–1703) was an English draughtsman and engraver. A Londoner, he was a pupil of David Loggan, and became a leading portrait engraver. White was celebrated for his original portraits, drawn in pencil on vellum in the manner of Loggan. He died in reduced circumstances in Bloomsbury Market, where he had long resided, in November 1703. Works White's plates number about four hundred. They include many of the public and literary characters of the period. A large proportion of them were executed from the life, the rest begin from pictures by Lely, Kneller, Riley, Beale, and others. Among the plates engraved by White from his own drawings are individual portraits of: Prince George of Denmark; the Earl of Athlone; the Duke of Leeds; and the Earl of Seaforth.
