Robert Thornton (darts Player)
Robert "Bob" Thornton (born 17 July 1967) is a Scottish professional darts player, who is the current World Seniors champion. Thornton is a three-time major winner between the BDO and PDC, having won the World Masters in 2007, UK Open in 2012, and World Grand Prix in 2015. He is also a former finalist at the Players Championship Finals in 2009 and Grand Slam of Darts in 2013. In addition, Thornton has reached three World Championship quarter-finals across both organisations and was a participant in the Premier League in 2013, 2014 and 2016. BDO career Thornton returned to playing darts in 2002, having given up the game for two decades to raise his children. He qualified for the BDO World Championship for the first time in 2005. He beat Martin Atkins and Tony West before losing to Darryl Fitton in the quarter-finals. He then failed to qualify for the 2006 and 2007 events. The 2013 Coral Masters was the inaugural staging of the non-ranking darts tournament The Masters, held by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). It was held between 1–3 November 2013 at the Royal Highland Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland. Phil Taylor won the title by beating Adrian Lewis 10–1 in the final. The 2009 PDC Pro Tour was a series of non-televised darts tournaments organised by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). They consisted of Professional Dart Players Association (PDPA) Players Championships and UK Open Regional Finals. Prize money In addition, £400 per Pro Tour event was reserved for a nine-dart finish. The 2012 PDC Pro Tour was a series of non-televised darts tournaments organised by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). They were the Professional Dart Players Association (PDPA) Players Championships, the UK Open Qualifiers, and the new European Tour events. This year there were 33 PDC Pro Tour events – 20 Players Championships, 8 UK Open Qualifiers, and 5 European Tour events. Prize money Prize money for each Players Championship and UK Open Qualifier is £34,600, unchanged from 2011. Prize money for each European Tour event was £82,100. In addition, the 32 players who failed to qualify for a European Tour event at the final qualifying stage receive £100. The 2015 European Darts Open was the sixth of nine PDC European Tour events on the 2015 PDC Pro Tour. The 2022 World Seniors Darts Matchplay (known for sponsorship reasons as the 2022 JENNINGSbet World Seniors Darts Matchplay) was the first World Seniors Darts Matchplay organised by the World Seniors Darts Tour and was held at the Bonus Arena in Kingston upon Hull between 1–3 July 2022. Robert Thornton won his second WSDT title, by defeating Phil Taylor 12–10 in the final, after Taylor missed two match darts to win the title. He had a dart whilst leading 8–6 at double 16, and also missed a dart at double 18 when leading 8–7. Thornton then brought the final to extra legs, which he eventually got two clear in to win 12–10. The 2022 World Seniors Darts Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the 2022 JENNINGSbet World Seniors Darts Championship) was the first World Seniors Darts Championship organised by the World Seniors Darts Tour and was held at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet between 3 and 6 February 2022.
