Robert M. Oppenheim
Robert Matthew Oppenheim is an American scholar of Korean studies. He is a professor of Asian studies and anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin. Oppenheim majored in anthropology at Princeton University, graduating in 1991. He received his Ph.D. (2003) and M.A. (1995) in sociocultural anthropology at the University of Chicago. At the University of Texas, he directed the Center for East Asian Studies from 2011 to 2015. He is the author of the book ''Kyǒngju Things: Assembling Place'' (Ann Arbor: University of Michigan Press, 2008). In 2015, Oppenheim won the Global Korea Award of the Council on Korean Studies at Michigan State University. Korean Studies
Korean studies is an academic discipline that focuses on the study of Korea, which includes the Republic of Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and diasporic Korean populations. Areas commonly included under this rubric include Korean history, Korean culture, Korean literature, Korean art, Korean music, Korean language and linguistics, Korean sociology and anthropology, Korean politics, Korean economics, Korean folklore, Korean ethnomusicology and increasingly study of Korean popular culture. Asian studies is the term used usually in North America and Australia for what in Europe is known as Oriental studies. The field is concerned with the Asian people, their cultures, languages, history and politics. Within the Asian sphere, Asian studies combines aspects of sociology, history, cultural anthropology and many other disciplines to study political, cultural and economic phenomena in Asian traditional and contemporary societies. Asian studies forms a field of post-graduate study in many universities. Anthropology
Anthropology is the scientific study of humanity, concerned with human behavior, human biology, cultures, societies, and linguistics, in both the present and past, including past human species. Social anthropology studies patterns of behavior, while cultural anthropology studies cultural meaning, including norms and values. A portmanteau term sociocultural anthropology is commonly used today. Linguistic anthropology studies how language influences social life.
