Robert Gledden
Robert John Gledden (26 December 1855 – 5 November 1927) was an English-born Australian surveyor and public benefactor. Gledden was born at Bishopwearmouth, Sunderland, County Durham, England. As a youth Gledden spent many years in Germany, Finland (then part of the Russian Empire) and other continental countries, and became a good linguist. He moved to Australia around 1890 and was licensed as a surveyor in Queensland. He went to Perth, Western Australia, about the beginning of 1892, and after practising for a few months as a surveyor was asked by William Marmion, then the minister of lands, to take charge of mining surveys at Coolgardie. He made a preliminary survey there and about a year later laid out the site of Kalgoorlie. Surveying or land surveying is the technique, profession, art, and science of determining the terrestrial two-dimensional or three-dimensional positions of points and the distances and angles between them. A land surveying professional is called a land surveyor. Gledden Building
The Gledden Building is an Art Deco office building in Perth, Western Australia. The building was constructed on land that had been bequested to the University of Western Australia by surveyor Robert Gledden. Site and brief The building is located on the corner of William Street and Hay Street in the Perth Central Business District. It is one of three heritage buildings on the corner - the other two being the Walsh's Building and the Wesley Church. It is located between two shorter heritage-listed art deco buildings - Devon House and the P&O Building (also known as the Orient Line building and the Malaysia Airlines building). The land on which the building now sits was once part of a lot that extended along William Street between Hay Street and St Georges Terrace. Caulfield is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, south-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Glen Eira local government area.
