Robert Beckett
Robert Beckett (28 November 1862 – 2 June 1917) was an English-born Australian politician. Early life He arrived in Melbourne, Australia in 1867 aged five, and settled with his family in Surrey Hills, Victoria. His father died when he was ten, after which he assumed the role of father in his family. He initially worked for a printer while continuing his studies, qualifying as a solicitor in his late twenties. Joseph Hood (of Malleson, England & Stewart) secured him articles with Abbott & Eales. Beckett married Ethel Anna Wells in Sydney, New South Wales on 30 April 1903. Political career Becket was a Boroondara shire Councillor from 1892 to 1902, Camberwell shire councillor from 1902 to 1905 and mayor from 1907 to 1908. Beckett was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council representing East Yarra as a Non-Labor member from June 1913 to June 1917 and died while in office. James Merritt (Australian Politician)
James Kerr Merritt (29 September 1856 – 14 November 1943) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in London to victualler Francis Merritt and Anne Kerr. On 19 April 1882 he married Emily Florence Houfe, with whom he had two daughters. He worked as a commercial traveller and migrated to Australia around 1887, inventually becoming chairman of several companies. He was a member of Kew City Council from 1901 to 1915 and served as mayor from 1904 to 1905. William Edgar (Australian Politician)
William Haslem Edgar (21 January 1858 – 6 June 1948) was an Australian politician. He was born at St Arnaud to Irish-born engineer Edward Edgar and Mary, ''née'' Haslem. He attended St Arnaud Public School and Stawell Grammar School before working in a Melbourne warehouse for five years. He married his first wife, Elizabeth Cecelia Bingley, around 1887. He worked as a draper in Dunolly and served on the borough council from 1885 to 1886 before moving to Melbourne in around 1888 to work as an estate agent. In 1902 he was elected to Malvern City Council, serving as mayor from 1906 to 1907 and leaving the council in 1909. He was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council in 1904 as the non-Labor member for Melbourne West, holding the seat until his defeat in 1913. James Balfour (10 May 1830 – 24 August 1913) was a Scottish-born Australian merchant and politician, member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly 1866 to 1868 and of the Victorian Legislative Council from 1874 to 1913. Early life Balfour was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, son of John and Robina, ''née'' Gordon . He was educated at the Edinburgh Academy and the University of Edinburgh. Balfour had some commercial experience in London from 1849 to 1852. Australia Balfour arrived in Melbourne in 1852 as the representative of Messrs.
