Robert Allen (Ontario Politician)
Robert Aloysius Allen (April 21, 1888 – August 21, 1969) was a Canadian businessman and politician in Ontario. He was a Liberal member in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from 1934 to 1937 who represented the downtown Toronto riding of Riverdale. Background The son of William Allen and Mary Badger, he came to Canada in 1904. In 1919, Allen married Julien McDonnell, the daughter of Randall McDonnell. Together, they raised two sons. His elder son, William, later served as Metro Toronto Chairman. Allen was president of Allen Drugs Ltd. Politics Allen served on Toronto city council from 1927 to 1930, and in 1933. He ran unsuccessfully for the Toronto East seat in the Canadian House of Commons in 1930 as a Liberal, losing to Conservative Edmond Baird Ryckman. Toronto East
Toronto East (called East Toronto until 1903) was a federal electoral district represented in the House of Commons of Canada from 1867 to 1935. It was located in the city of Toronto in the province of Ontario. It was created by the British North America Act of 1867. East Toronto initially consisted of St. Lawrence, St. Davids and St. James Wards of the city of Toronto. In 1872, St. James Ward was excluded from the riding. After 1903, the boundaries varied, but generally included the part of the city east of Sherbourne Street. The electoral district was abolished in 1933 when it was redistributed between Broadview and Greenwood ridings. 1937 Ontario General Election
The 1937 Ontario general election was held on October 6, 1937, to elect the 90 Members of the 20th Legislative Assembly of Ontario ("MLAs"). It was the 20th general election held in the Province of Ontario. The Ontario Liberal Party, led by Mitchell Hepburn, was re-elected for a second term in government, with a slightly reduced majority in the Legislature. The Ontario Conservative Party, led by William Earl Rowe, was able to win six additional seats, and continued to form the official opposition. Meanwhile, the fledgling democratic socialist Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) ran 37 candidates out of a possible 90, led by party president John Mitchell running in Waterloo South, who also campaigned throughout the province on the party's behalf. Mitchell Hepburn
Mitchell Frederick Hepburn (August 12, 1896 – January 5, 1953) was the 11th premier of Ontario, from 1934 to 1942. He was the youngest premier in Ontario history, appointed at age 37. He was the only Ontario Liberal Party leader in the 20th century to lead his party to two majorities. Early life Born in St. Thomas, Ontario, Hepburn attended school in Elgin County and hoped to become a lawyer. His formal education ended abruptly, however, when someone threw an apple at a visiting dignitary, Sir Adam Beck, and knocked his silk top hat off his head. Hepburn was accused of the deed and denied it but refused to identify the culprit. Refusing to apologize, he walked out of his high school and obtained a job as a bank clerk at the Canadian Bank of Commerce where he worked from 1913 to 1917. 1934 Ontario General Election
The 1934 Ontario general election was the 19th general election held in the Province of Ontario, Canada. It was held on June 19, 1934, to elect the 19th Legislative Assembly of Ontario ("MLAs"). The Ontario Liberal Party, led by Mitchell Hepburn, defeated the governing Ontario Conservative Party, led by George Stewart Henry. Hepburn was assisted by Harry Nixon's Progressive bloc of MLAs who ran in this election as Liberal-Progressives on the understanding that they would support a Hepburn led government. Nixon, himself, became a senior cabinet minister in the Hepburn government. The Liberals won a majority in the Legislature, while the Conservatives lost four out of every five seats that they had won in the previous election. Edmond Baird Ryckman
Edmond Baird Ryckman, (April 15, 1866 – January 11, 1934) was a Canadian politician. His father, E.B. Ryckman, was a Methodist minister. He was educated at Brantford Collegiate Institute, the University of Toronto, and Osgoode Hall. Born in Huntingdon, Canada East, he was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada for the riding of Toronto East in the 1921 federal election. A Conservative, he was re-elected in 1925, 1926, and 1930. In 1926, he was the Minister of Public Works in the short lived cabinet of Arthur Meighen; when he accepted the post he resigned his position as president of the Dunlop Tire and Rubber Goods Company. William Randall Allen (June 29, 1919 – October 1, 1985) was a Canadian lawyer and politician who served as the Chairman of the Municipality of Metropolitan Toronto from 1962 to 1969. He is the namesake of the Allen Road, William R. Allen Road in Toronto, Ontario. Riverdale (provincial Electoral District)
Riverdale was a provincial riding in Ontario, Canada that existed from 1914 to 1999. It occupied an area east of the Don River from the city limits just north of Danforth Avenue south to Lake Ontario. It was named after the neighbourhood of Riverdale. In 1999 a major reduction in Ontario seats resulted in Riverdale being merged with part of East York into a larger riding called Broadview-Greenwood. The 1964 by-election in this riding is well known for being among the first elections in Canadian history where a party (the NDP) used door to door canvassing and a get out the vote effort. Boundaries In 1914 the riding was created out of the Toronto East riding. Its initial borders were Logan Avenue from Ashbridges Bay to the city limits just north of the Danforth.
