RjB 9 And 10
RjB 9 and RjB 10 were two identical electric locomotives operated by Norsk Transport on Rjukanbanen in Norway. Built by Swiss Sécheron and German Jung in 1958, they served until the closing of the line in 1991. The locomotives were equipped with four 183 kW motors, giving 732 kW in total. They could operate at 55 km/h, and were built for both 10 kV and 15 kV electrical systems; the former was used on Rjukanbanen until the older RjB 1–8 were retired in 1966, and the power changed to the standard of Norges Statsbaner Vygruppen, branded as Vy, is a government-owned railway company which operates most passenger train services and many bus services in Norway. The (SAAS, in English translated as ''"Anonymous Society of Sécheron Workshops"'') was a joint-stock company based in Geneva, Switzerland. It specialized in electrical engineering, including the manufacture of electrical equipment and locomotives. The Arnold Jung Lokomotivfabrik (Arnold Jung Locomotive Works) was a locomotive manufacturer, in particular of Feldbahn locomotives, in Kirchen, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. History The firm was founded on 13 February 1885 as Jung & Staimer OHG by Arnold Jung and Christian Staimer. On 3 September 1885 the first locomotive was delivered. In 1913 the company was renamed Arnold Jung Lokomotivfabrik GmbH, Jungenthal. In 1976 locomotive production was stopped in favour of other products such as machine tools, transporters, armour plating, cranes and bridgelayers. Jung built more than 12,000 locomotives. In the 1950s it built 51 DB Class 23 2-6-2 locomotives, including in 1959, number 23 105, the last new steam locomotive supplied to the Deutsche Bundesbahn. Hydro Transport AS was a railway company, railway- and List of ship companies, shipping company responsible for the transport of chemicals from Norsk Hydro Rjukan. A subsidiary of Norsk Hydro, the company was founded in 1907, operations ceased in 1991, while the company became defunct at the end of 2009. To transport the products to the coastal port at Skien, Norsk Hydro needed to build an extensive railway network. Cargo was stored in tank cars and transported down the Rjukan Line, Rjukanbanen to Mæl Station, Mæl, where it was transferred to the Tinnsjø railway ferry. After a ride across the lake, it was again transferred to Tinnoset Line and transported to Notodden where it was transshipped to barges and transported down the Telemark Canal. An electric locomotive is a locomotive powered by electricity from overhead lines, a third rail or on-board energy storage such as a battery or a supercapacitor. Locomotives with on-board fuelled prime movers, such as diesel engines or gas turbines, are classed as diesel-electric or gas turbine-electric and not as electric locomotives, because the electric generator/motor combination serves only as a power transmission system. Electric locomotives benefit from the high efficiency of electric motors, often above 90% (not including the inefficiency of generating the electricity). Additional efficiency can be gained from regenerative braking, which allows kinetic energy to be recovered during braking to put power back on the line. NSB El 7
NSB El 7 was a series electric locomotives delivered between 1911 and 1918 to Norsk Transport that operated the Rjukan Line and the Tinnoset Line, where they were designated RjB.1, 2, 3, 6, 7 and 8. The locomotives were built by AEG (motor) and Skabo (chassis). The first three locomotives were delivered to the Rjukan Line along with two smaller units, RjB 4 and 5 (which were given the designation El 6 by NSB). El 7 is exactly two El 6; it has two transformers, four motors instead of two, Bo'Bo' instead of Bo axle arrangement, two pantographs, the same speed, and could haul twice the load. The locomotives cost NOK 52,090 in 1911. When two of the locos (no. 1 and 3) were transferred to Norwegian State Railways in 1920 after NSB took over the Tinnoset Line, where they were designated El 7 and numbered 2501 and 2502. Vygruppen, branded as Vy, is a government-owned railway company which operates most passenger train services and many bus services in Norway.
