Riverview Speedway
The Murray Machining & Sheds Murray Bridge Speedway (formerly ''Riverview Speedway'') is a Dirt track racing venue that is located in the town of Murray Bridge, South Australia, only 66 km from Adelaide. Racing at the speedway generally takes place between September and April meetings held on Saturday nights. Racing has been held at the venue continuously since opening in 1958. History Murray Bridge based car dealer, and known South Australian speedway identity Kevin Fischer, along with Les Schulz, a dry cleaner, started Riverview Speedway in 1958 on the relatively unpopulated eastern side of the Murray River. The track was cut into the side of a hill which provided spectators with an unimpeded view of the entire track. Murray Bridge (formerly Mobilong and Edwards Crossing) is a city in the Australian state of South Australia, located east-southeast of the state's capital city, Adelaide, and north of the town of Meningie. The city had an urban population of approximately 18,779 as at June 2018, Estimated resident population, 30 June 2018. making it the fifth most populous city in the state after Adelaide, Mount Gambier, Gawler and Whyalla. Australian Formula 500 Championship
The Australian Formula 500 Championship is an annual dirt track racing championship meeting held in Australia for Formula 500 cars. Formula 500's in Australia evolved from the old TQ's (Three Quarter Speedcar Midget) of the 1950s and 1960s. The first Australian Championship was held on 28 December 1964 at the Point Pass Speedway and was won by South Australian driver Bob Lane. A 40 and 50 year reunion for the event was held in November 2004 and 2014. The current Australian Champion is Liam Williams who won the title at the Gunnedah Speedway in New South Wales. The championship was known as the Australian TQ Championship from 1964-1976, after which it was renamed the Australian Formula 500 Championship. The 2017 Australian Championship was held at the Murray Bridge Speedway in Murray Bridge, SA on 17 April and was won by Queensland's Liam Williams who won his 3rd national championship. The 2001 Australian Individual Speedway Championship was held at the Riverview Speedway in Murray Bridge, South Australia on 3 February. Former World #3 Todd Wiltshire won his second Australian Championship after defeating defending champion Leigh Adams in a runoff. Australian Individual Speedway Championship
The Australian Solo Championship is a motorcycle speedway championship held each year to determine the Australian national champion. It is organised by Motorcycling Australia (MA) and is the oldest continuously running national speedway championship in the world having been run since 1926 with the exception of 1942-1945 when racing was suspended during World War II and 1955-1961 when the championship was not held. The first Australian Solo Championship in 1926 was held at the Newcastle Showground in Newcastle. It was won by American rider Cecil Brown from Mick Brennan and Roy Hindle. Legendary Danish rider Ole Olsen (1976) and Australia's own Jason Crump (2007) are the only riders who have won the championship while being the reigning Speedway World Champion. Brandon Stadium
Brandon Stadium, also known as Coventry Stadium, is located 6 miles east of Coventry in Brandon, Warwickshire, England. It was the home of the Coventry Bees motorcycle speedway team. It also hosted BriSCA F1 Stock Car Racing on the 1st Saturday of the month from April through to November. From 1978 until early 2016 it intermittently hosted greyhound racing. As of 2022, it is closed and has become dilapidated after several fires, including an arson attack. Speedway History Brandon Stadium's first speedway meeting took place on 29 September 1928. The track was owned by Midland Sports Stadiums (who also owned Leicester Speedway) and Charles Ochiltree promoted the Speedway and Stock Car Racing until his death in 1998. A burnout (also known as a peel out, power brake, or brakestand) is the practice of keeping a vehicle stationary and spinning its wheels, the resultant friction causing the tires to heat up and smoke. History The origins of burnouts can be traced to drag racing, where they have a practical purpose: drag racing slicks perform better at higher temperatures, and a burnout is the quickest way to raise tire temperature immediately prior to a race. They also clean the tire of any debris and lay down a layer of rubber by the starting line for better traction.
