Rio (Amatrice)
Rio (''Villa Rio'' or ''Villa Rivo'') is a hamlet in the municipality of Amatrice in the province of Rieti, in the Lazio region of Italy. It is situated approximately away from the municipal seat. It is located at above sea level within the boundary of the protected area of the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park near the Fosso Caporio. History The most common explanation is that the toponym Rio is of Latin origin and refers to a nearby stream ("rivus"). The historical information about the ''Villa Rio'' dates from after the 16th century. This area was probably built around a religious building, like other areas in Amatrice that were near the center.''Perimetrazione di Rio. Relazione tecnica illustrativa'', 2018 The 1639 earthquake in Amatrice damaged it a lot, but it doesn't seem to have been separated from the ''Universitas'' like other ''ville'' did between 1641 and 1643. The important records of Rio's history from 1749 to 1755 are kept in the State Archive of L'Aq ...

August 2016 Central Italy Earthquake
An earthquake, measuring 6.2 ± 0.016 on the moment magnitude scale, hit Central Italy on 24 August 2016 at 03:36:32 CEST (01:36 UTC). Its epicentre was close to Accumoli, with its hypocentre at a depth of 4 ± 1 km, approximately southeast of Perugia and north of L'Aquila, in an area near the borders of the Umbria, Lazio, Abruzzo and Marche regions. , 299 people had been killed. Background The central Apennines is one of the most seismically active areas in Italy. The Apennines mountain belt were formed in the Miocene to Pliocene as a result of the ongoing subduction of the Adriatic Plate beneath the Eurasian Plate, forming a fold and thrust belt. During the Quaternary, thrust tectonics gave way to extensional tectonics, with the development of a zone of normal faulting running along the crest of the mountain range. The extension is a result of either subduction rollback or the opening of the Tyrrhenian Sea. In the Central Apennines the zone of ext ...

Orsini Family
The House of Orsini is an Italian noble family that was one of the most influential princely families in medieval Italy and Renaissance Rome. Members of the Orsini family include five popes: Stephen II (752-757), Paul I (757-767), Celestine III (1191–1198), Nicholas III (1277–1280), and Benedict XIII (1724–1730). In addition, the family included 34 cardinals, numerous ''condottieri'', and other significant political and religious figures. Origins According to their own family legend, the Orsini are descended from the Julio-Claudian dynasty of ancient Rome. The Orsini carried on a political feud with the Colonna family for centuries in Rome, until it was stopped by Papal Bull in 1511. In 1571, the heads of both families married nieces of Pope Sixtus V as an act of reconciliation. Ironically the Colonna family also claims descent from the Julio-Claudian dynasty of ancient Rome. The Orsini descend from Cajo Orso Orsini who lived c. 600 CE. Five popes are descended f ...
