The Rindge family is an American family of British origin that was financially successful in real estate, natural resource development, and insurance. History The successes of the Rindge family began with the Cambridge, Massachusetts textile, shipping, and banking businesses of Mr. Samuel Baker Rindge (the father of Frederick Hastings Rindge). Ultimately the family expanded into various other areas of industry and philanthropy. Frederick Rindge, for example, built and donated parks, City Hall, and the Rindge Technical School in Cambridge, Massachusetts; the First Methodist Episcopal Church in Santa Monica, California; and was deeply involved in civic life, from writing meditative books to serving as vice president of Union Oil to serving as director of Edison Electric. Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit
Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit was a Spanish land grant in the Santa Monica Mountains and adjacent coast, within present day Los Angeles County, California. It was given by Spanish Governor José Joaquín de Arrillaga in 1804 to José Bartolomé Tapia. The present day communities of Malibu and western Topanga are located on parts of the former rancho. History José Bartolomé Tapia was the eldest of nine children of Felipe Santiago Tapia, a soldier in the De Anza Expedition of 1775. In 1800, José Bartolomé Tapia applied, as a reward for his own Army service, for a grant of the land he saw as a youth. The grant was made in 1804, and Tapia settled on the land, to graze his cattle and raise his family. In 1848 Tapia's widow (Maria Francisca Mauricia Villalobo) sold the rancho to her grandson-in-law, Leon Victor Prudhomme who had married a daughter of Tiburcio Tapia, grantee of Rancho Cucamonga. Hueneme, Malibu And Port Los Angeles Railway
The Hueneme, Malibu & Port Los Angeles Railway was a standard-gauge, 15-mile railroad in Malibu, California. It was founded by Frederick Hastings Rindge (1857–1905) and operated on his 13,000-acre ranch along the coast, which encompassed most of what is today Malibu. He struggled for years to keep trespassers off of his land, and feared that the Southern Pacific Company would use the power of eminent domain to build a railroad through his property. This threat animated Rindge to plan his own railroad to thwart the efforts of the Southern Pacific. This was part of his overall effort to keep outsiders off of his ranch and spoil what he considered to be paradise. Malibu Potteries
Malibu Potteries was a ceramic tile manufacturer in Malibu, California. Malibu Potteries was founded by Rhoda May Knight Rindge in 1926. A fire devastated the company 30 September 1931, and the company closed in 1932. Tile designs included influences the styles of Moorish, Egyptian, Mayan and Saracen cultures. Many of the tile designs were geometric. The company was known for their tile murals consisting of tiles with peacocks and other birds. The company also produced decorated tiles for floors in the style of a laid-out Persian rug. May Rindge's daughter's house, the historic Adamson House, has many examples of the tile produced by Malibu Potteries. The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area is a United States national recreation area containing many individual parks and open space preserves, located primarily in the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California. The SMMNRA is in the greater Los Angeles region, with two thirds of the parklands in northwest Los Angeles County, and the remaining third, including a Simi Hills extension, in southeastern Ventura County. Overall administration is by the National Park Service, coordinating with state, county, municipal, and university agencies. Rindge Dam
Rindge Dam is a dam on Malibu Creek in the Santa Monica Mountains of Southern California. Located in Malibu Creek State Park, it sits just northeast of Malibu Canyon Road, and is partially visible from the turnouts south of the tunnel. History The dam was built by hired workers of May Knight Rindge, who owned the Malibu Ranch, the former Rancho Topanga Malibu Sequit, at that time. The frame of the dam was constructed using rails from the Hueneme, Malibu and Port Los Angeles Railway, which was a 15-mile railroad that May Rindge built through the Malibu Ranch. The dual walls of the dam were built into an already-existing rock monolith in the center of Malibu Creek; the only place they meet is at the top.
