Ridgeton Farm
Ridgeton Farm is a historic home located at Taylor's Island, Dorchester County, Maryland, United States. It is an Italianate style, two story home built about 1857-1860 by the local architect Fred Ridgeton, who was quite unknown in the region. The house features a hip roof with a center gable, a widow's walk, and two huge interior chimneys. The property also includes a complex of 19th century barn and sheds. Taylors Island is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Dorchester County, Maryland, United States, in the state's Eastern Shore region. The population was 173 at the 2010 census. It is known for hunting, crabbing and fishing. Ridgeton Farm was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Bethlehem Methodist Episcopal Church and Grace Episcopal Church Complex were listed in 1979. Geography Taylors Island is in western Dorchester County on the eastern shore of Chesapeake Bay. The Italianate style was a distinct 19th-century phase in the history of Classical architecture. Hip Roof
A hip roof, hip-roof or hipped roof, is a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls, usually with a fairly gentle slope (although a tented roof by definition is a hipped roof with steeply pitched slopes rising to a peak). Widow's Walk
A widow's walk, also known as a widow's watch or roofwalk, is a railed rooftop platform often having an inner cupola/turret frequently found on 19th-century North American coastal houses. The name is said to come from the wives of mariners, who would watch for their spouses' return, often in vain as the ocean took their lives, leaving the women widows. In other coastal communities, the platforms were called captain's walks, as they topped the homes of the more successful captains; supposedly, ship owners and captains would use them to search the horizon for ships due in port. However, there is little or no evidence that widow's walks were intended or regularly used to observe shipping.
