Rick Austin (politician)
Dr. Rick Austin is an American politician. He was a Republican member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, and he represented the 10th District from January 12, 2009 until September 2011. Previously, he was a member of the Habersham County, Georgia, Board of Commissioners for three years. District 10 of the Georgia House of Representatives encompasses all of Habersham County and parts of White County. In the 2009 election, he ran unopposed in the general election. Austin is a graduate of Piedmont College, Auburn University, and the University of Mississippi, where he received his PhD in Biology in 1997. He is an associate biology professor at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia, his hometown. In 2011 Austin attempted a bid for the Georgia State Senate District 50, and ultimately lost. White County is a county located in the northeastern part of the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 census, the population was 28,003. The county seat is Cleveland. The county was created on December 22, 1857, formerly a part of Habersham County and most likely was named for Newton County Representative David T. White, who helped a Habersham representative successfully attain passage of an act creating the new county. The Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) were a set of tests administered at public schools in the state of Georgia that are designed to test the knowledge of first through eighth graders in reading, English/language arts (ELA), and mathematics, and third through eighth graders additionally in science and social studies. Georgia law, as amended by the A+ Education Reform Act of 2000, requires that all students from first to eighth grade take the CRCT in the content areas of reading, English/language arts, and mathematics. Students in grades three through eight are also assessed in science and social studies.
